Calendar

  • What: Johnny Cupcakes Suitcase Tour
  • When: 6 p.m., Saturday, April 17
  • Where: Retro Bakery, 7785 N. Durango Dr., 586-3740.

Some people like their cupcakes made of red velvet cake or topped with rich buttercream frosting and dusted with sprinkles. Some people like them made of chocolate and vanilla or modeled after a festive holiday. I like my cupcakes on T-shirts. Preferably ones made by Massachusetts-based designer Johnny Cupcakes.

Johnny Cupcakes, whose real name is Johnny Earle, is one of those cult fashion heroes who stumbled into his 100 percent cotton stardom completely by accident. Now, years after launching his brand out of a suitcase as a touring musician, The Cupcake Man is back on the road with his suitcase. And he's heading our way.

Johnny and his Cupcakemobile will be setting up shop Saturday at Retro Bakery, selling six T-shirt designs exclusive to the national tour that's bringing him and his wares all across the U.S. Sizes sell out quickly, cautions Retro owner Kari Haskell, especially for the women's line. So, if you're picky about how your cupcake-and-crossbones-emblazoned casualwear fits, best to get there right on time when the sale starts at 6 p.m.

Of course, picking up the hottest in sugar-coated fashions isn't the only incentive for heading to Retro on Saturday evening. The Slidin' Thru slider truck will be setting up nearby, and the bakery also will be presenting Mr. Cupcakes — of whom Haskell is a big fan — with a custom cake. There will be a limited supply of free cupcakes on hand for folks who like theirs with a healthy crown of homemade buttercream.

As for me, I'll be wearing my current favorite cupcake on my shirt: a yellow JC T-shirt with a chubby kid holding a delicious confection. I'm not sure what flavor it is, but from the look on his cartoon face, it's the most delicious cupcake in the world.
