Harrah’s Entertainment is looking to hire 500 workers for positions at its Las Vegas casinos.
The casino operator announced today that it is looking to fill 125 full-time positions and 375 temporary, on-call or part-time positions.
Full-time positions include retail sales associates, guest room attendants, cooks, front desk agents, security officers, food servers, cashiers, assistant food and beverage managers, and line cooks. Seasonal positions include lifeguards, pool hosts and pool attendants.
Harrah’s is also looking to fill temporary positions for the World Series of Poker tournament, including sales associates, cashiers, valet and servers.
Harrah’s will host a job fair Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rio to begin its search.
The positions will be available across all the Harrah’s properties.
The unemployment rate in the Las Vegas area increased to 13.9 percent in February, the 14th consecutive month of double-digit joblessness in Southern Nevada.

About time!
One would think that Harrah's would attempt to recall some of the thousands they laid off earlier. Ah, but it's Harrah's...ethics don't apply here.
I was about to say the same thing matts7052, and one would think they would just call a bunch of people that have been applying for jobs on their website. Makes way too much sense apparently
The Mandalay Bay is looking for about 20 Concierge's. Monte Carlo too, but maybe not as many.
go to the hotels' websites home page and click on 'employment', or do a google search for mgm mirage careers. Good Luck!
someone always has to hate on reid or obama. like they could do a better job.
Legally there are complications to hiring back laid off workers which could lead to lawsuits of discrimination. Harrah's probably will rehire some former workers, but they will be brought in as new workers.
an 8 year old with a lemonade stand could do better than obama.
at least the 8 yesr old believes in capitalism and working for a living.
This is another sign that the worst is behind us. It's going to be slow going. I am glad for Harrah's, they will be able to pick and choose from a very large pool of qualified applcants. Sometimes thinking positive pays off!
Stevem - so true!
I work in a casino and we have been hiring full time staff steadily. Our business has been getting better and we have added over a hundred jobs.
vc - where?
I cannot understand Harrah's Human Resource office already has probably thousands of applications on file. Best of luck to job seekers tho.
OH YEAH!! THE VALLEY IS ROCKING AND ROLLING BABY!!!
At least it seems to do better than California!!
Remember when Wynn wanted to hire 400??
THERE IS A SIGN!!
LONG LIVE LAS VEGAS GROWTH....
and will get way crazier if my dreams come true..
good luck to all if desperation is so great you would actually take a job working for Harrahs.
Those retail sales associate jobs are hell on Earth.
I work for a Harrahs property and they have re-hired everyone they laid off. Everyone always likes to knock Harrahs, but without this company Las Vegas would be done....
This is WONDERFUL news!!
I've worked for Harrah's almost 6 years. It's a good company just going through tough times like everyone else.
"Places like Repbulic Services, Wal-Mart, fast food restaurants, grocery stores and other employers. They may not be the greatest paying or glamour jobs, but they are jobs"
I find that hard to believe since every store, fast food restaurantS, grocery store, etc. out here aren't hiring anyone! They have skeleton staff in all the stores and if you need help with anything, have a 10-15 minute wait for someone to help you.
It was mentioned on GMA this morning that sure, lot of companies are posting profits but none are hiring because then that negates their bottom line.
This is great news about Harrah's though. After all - the tourist season is a month away. Hopefully, all those called back and those getting hired have job security come next September after tourism season ends.
I am glad all you people who think this is wonderful are thrilled, but the fact is that these are temporary jobs to satisfy seasonal demand.
I bet half of the jobs are related to swimming pools, cabanas or service to people that utilize them.
Having said that, I agree that something is better than nothing... Its just that this isn't the long term sustainable solution and shouldn't be mistaken as such!
i would not go out and buy the champagne yet. this IS an election year and those "evil rich republicans" are the ones that decide when to put out the "now hiring" sign and unless reid is defeated, that sign is going to be collecting dust until 2012.
the more you tax = the less they hire.

i wonder how this job fair/hiring process will help anyone except entry level and/or unskilled jobseekers. what about the rest of us with valuable professional experience. where are the jobs for us?
In a couple more weeks, I'll be seeing you folks for another full-week's vacation stay in Las Vegas...all thanks to Harrahs Properties I might add! Still are some decent, economical R/T Airfares if one does their homework in advance w/o waiting to book at the last minute. Recession or not, Vegas still Totally Rocks! Oh sure, I go to the local casinos back home East, but the experience is just not the same! You are stranded in one and only that one place...whereas when going out to Vegas, folks have the option to venture out and about to vast establishments/venues along with Vegas' great restaurants and entertainment!
I arrived in Las Vegas on my honeymoon after a 21 hour drive from Canada on Sunday April 4 2010 at 3 am. My wife was robbed in the casino right by the Bugsy theatre at 6 am. It took 4 minutes for the security to arrive. They did nothing and allowed one of the thugs to escape and the other one to run in to the washroom and throw our valuables down the toilet. The response by harrahs and The flamingo was so abysmal that we have hired a lawyer to sue them. What they should do is hire more security guards to create a safe environment in their casino. Never go there it is not safe!
stevem knows ALL ABOUT 8 year-old kids; he is one!
What do they have open for someone with a Computer Science degree and 15years of application and database development experience?

These job fairs are really NOT for people with professional experience. I went to a job fair a couple of weeks ago. It looked more like an arts & crafts fair than a job fair. One particular company that I had applied to for several positions was there with their HR rep. For one thing, the girl was all of 25 years old with a "fake and bake tan". The whole time I was talking to her, her eyes were scanning the rest of the room. She barely looked me in the eye. Finally, after she decided no one appealed to her as a potential employee, she basically came out and told me in so many words I had way too much professional experience to even be considered for a $10 an hr job regardless if I had experience in the company's business or not (which is a very common occurrence happening these days). She was rude and totally contrary to the company's business - a casino! As we all know - if the HR person does not display proper customer service skills - what about the rest of the employees? I almost wrote a letter to the CEO of the company, but decided I don't want to burn any bridges while still looking for a job!!!
GOINGBUST:
Check out the Harrah's website. When I was still in Vegas, I always checked Harrah's website and at any given time, there were 15-20 pages of jobs with about 5-6 on a page, many in the tech field.
I'll look tonight. The web filter here hates gambling and sports sites.
Great news.
How many people over 30 will be considered? Certainly none for the 'pool' jobs.
lawyerman, I sure hate that you had such a terrible experience. You would think the hotel staff would go out of their way to make your stay better while you recovered from your episode. One bit of advice to those that don't come to Vegas often. Don't even go near anything other than the middle of the casinos between the hours of 2am and 7am. This is when the rats seem to come out.
Get over the fact that these hotels don't want their customers to look at servers who may be old, out of shape, or are terrible in the looks department. If you don't look like a model, which isn't subjective, you're not going to be hired. Everyone knows what a model looks like, they may not be perfect, but they do look good with their shirt off, for men, and they don't have fat bulging at the seems for females. I'd be uncomfortable anyway walking around half naked if I had any doubt that I wouldn't qualify as a model. Just like I'd be uncomfortable if someone asked me to engineer a rocket to Mars. Take it as a good thing, you can boss around the people who made it to being a model server and see that their job isn't all that great.
On another note I'm in line with the previous posters who say that Harrah's should look at the people who have already applied online for their jobs posted. It's silly to have people waste their time going to a job fair when they advocate applying online at all of their properties. I applied two weeks ago for one of these "500" jobs and I fit the bill perfectly, so I thought, and have yet to hear anything.
What's up with the weekly job fairs? Just a few days ago a yogurt hut was having a job fair, I think the name was Menchies? Saying you are hiring for two positions does not qualify as a job fair. It just means you are hiring. Career advisors always suggest not to go after the jobs everyone else is going after does that still apply today?
"It's silly to have people waste their time going to a job fair when they advocate applying online at all of their properties"
I think this is the norm. That job fair I went to, myself and several others were dressed in interview clothes, had our resumes at the ready (that is what is always suggested when they push these job fairs - bring plenty of resumes) but then EVERY employer had a sign that said "Job Openings - Please Apply OnLine". There was no instant interviews or instant hiring. Oh the dress code seemed to be "casual" ie jeans, shorts, etc.
"stevem knows ALL ABOUT 8 year-old kids; he is one!"
Comments make this don't really make you look very mature either. :/
As long as Ensign and Gibbons are lurking in office, LV is just fly over land on the way to John Wayne OC.
jbonnello, stevem will inject politics into a lemonade stand story. There are about twenty posters, in both ends of the spectrum, who believe that their rants will change someone's mind. For the rest of us, we have to endure this BS. I exercise my political convictions in the voting booth.
The Harrah's brass are beyond stuck-up, especially at Caesar's. I'm glad I no longer work for them.
Unfortunately, this town in a service industry town and visuals are a priority. It doesn't matter if you have the intelligence...
So about a year and half ago I move to Las Vegas...City of dreams...I am retired for serving my country and community for over 29 years...I try to get a job as anything especially security as that is what I am well qualified in. Walk up and down the strip and downtown...dont even get a call back. Young female at one of the casinos says to me oh you should get a job with no problem, I barely got my GED and was hired in a week. No call back from that casino either...I was good enough to go to the middle east making 140 g a year as a security contractor with a secret security clearance but not a single call back from 25 casinos...life is good in Vegas...
Unfortunately, you picked a bad time to move to Vegas.
@buckiefan,
I'd look into some of the private security agencies here instead of the casinos. These days, in this crappy economy, casinos are a dangerous place to work and I know you put yourself in harm's way enough in your lifetime.
