Las Vegas Sands to resume work on Pennsylvania hotel tower

Sands Bethlehem

Las Vegas Sands opened its newest casino in Bethlehem, Pa. Friday. The $743 million casino's architecture pays homage to the steel mill, but locals and Las Vegas Sands executives hope the slot parlor can help the gambling giant overcome pressures against its own struggling industry. Las Vegas Sands announced today that after receiving approval of its table games application and renewal of its slots license at its Pennsylvania property, it will resume work on its 300-room hotel tower.

Work on the hotel tower at Sands Bethlehem was halted in November 2008, but Las Vegas Sands President Michael Leven said today that the company has been working on updated designs since February. Leven said the hotel will now include 4,000 square feet of meeting space, an indoor swimming pool and a fitness center. The hotel tower is expected to be complete by May 2011.

"The company's board of directors has approved the plan for completing the hotel and we fully expect to see construction workers on the site within a matter of weeks," Leven said in a statement.

Sands also stopped work on the mall and events center at the property in November 2008, but Sands Casino President Robert DeSalvio told the board Wednesday that work would not resume until the market improves.

The company received approval of its application at Wednesday’s Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board meeting to add 89 table games, including blackjack, craps, roulette, poker and baccarat. Sands said it is targeting July to open table games to guests.

The Sands Bethlehem sits on the old Bethlehem Steel site in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. The casino opened in May 2009 with 3,000 slots and four restaurants, including one from Emeril Lagasse.

Sands denied rumors last month that it was trying to sell the casino because of disappointing results there. The casino earned $153.2 million in revenue during the months it was open in 2009.
