Report: Las Vegas is nation’s No. 2 destination for movers
Monday, April 5, 2010 | 3:03 p.m.
The Top 10 destinations
- 1. Houston
- 2. Las Vegas
- 3. Chicago
- 4. San Antonio, Texas
- 5. Orlando, Fla.
- 6. Austin, Texas
- 7. Atlanta
- 8. Sacramento, Calif.
- 9. Kansas City, Mo.
- 10. Denver
The slowdown in Las Vegas has put a damper on just about every marker of the local economy: The real estate bubble has burst, tourism and gaming numbers are down, unemployment is up.
But Las Vegas is still a top destination on many fronts, including as a place to move to.
According to U-Haul International Inc.’s annual survey, Las Vegas ranks No. 2 as a destination for movers. That’s up two notches from the previous year’s survey, which put Las Vegas at No. 4.
Houston took top honors this year at No. 1.
The annual migration report, titled "The 2009 Top 50 U.S. Destination Cities," reflects data compiled about movers who relocated more than 50 miles. The company said the data were compiled from more than 1 million U-Haul truck transactions that took place during a recent one-year period.
U-Haul said it looks at data for every city in the country regardless of size but noted the data aren't reflective of overall growth. The numbers don’t take population into account.
Las Vegas was the only city in Nevada on the list. Looking at nearby states, Phoenix ranked No. 14 and Tucson came in at No. 31. California pulled in a double-digit number cities on the list, which are: No. 8 Sacramento; No. 12 San Diego; No. 18 Los Angeles; No. 19 Van Nuys; No. 20 Costa Mesa; No. 24 San Francisco; No. 34 Long Beach; No. 37 Fullerton; No. 42 San Jose; No. 48 Fresno; and No. 50 Victorville.

stevem: EXACTLY! ??
Why in the world are they coming here? We are ground zero for the bust. No jobs in Vegas and they are still coming!
Oh please say it isn't so!!! My guess is that all of those U-Hauals are being rented for people to move outta here!! Keep moving people..Keep moving OUT!!!!!
Hopefully some of the people moving here have the money saved up to buy a home and support themselves while looking for work. Or, better yet, they are retirees.
People moving here in itself is a GOOD thing, naysayers. They spend money in our stores, they purchase homes and pay property taxes, and so on... However if they are coming here without a plan for supporting themselves (in other words, a JOB), they will be more of a burden then anything...
Hey, all you movers, test out those brakes big-time on your U-haul rental truck and STOP. Just come to a complete STOP. Whatever city you end up in will be better than southern Nevada. Do not, I repeat, do NOT continue on to Las Vegas. This city will suck you dry.
Our slogan is...
Las Vegas: Where people and their dreams come to die.
I just looked at the report
The top 10 growth areas include:
1. BRONX, N.Y. - 17.22%
2. HOUSTON, Texas - 10.80%
3. PORTLAND, Ore. - 10.16%
4. DALLAS, Texas - 9.48%
5. LOS ANGELES, Calif. - 7.87%
6. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - 6.88%
7. TAMPA, Fla. - 6.76%
8. ORLANDO, Fla. - 6.43%
9. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - 5.84%
10.VAN NUYS, Calif. - 5.80%

and depending on how you look at statistics, Vegas isn't even in the top 10. Here is the list by percentages from the same report.
My bad, I looked at the growth cities survey from U haul and not the destination city. Yes Vegas is number two for destinatination cities but didn't make the list for growth.
Well Vegas might be reported here as # 2 to move to, however a new Crime report issued today places Las Vegas # 1 out of fifteen as the # 1 WORST city for CRIME ! still want to move here???
Irvingtonguy, your numbers are looking at the rate of growth. Las Vegas was No. 21 on that list. The story above is based on the top destinations, where Vegas comes in at No. 2.
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/...
The fact of the matter is people come here because there are plenty of jobs. The problem is most of the layoffs came in jobs like construction where uneducated labor was making over $50-75K a year. Those people would rather sit around and draw unemployment than take a job that pays 20-40k. I have said it before and I will say it again. Every single person that I know who was really looking for a job, Found one with no problem.
Where are they moving from?

Sun Staff...something doesnt compute here. If LV was No. 2 on U haul's destinations but 21st for growth, doesnt that mean that somehow, U Hauls trucks and trailers are being shipped/drove/hauled to LV, but really an "out migration" from LV is occuring? Maybe to the top 10 Growth cities? Did you check to see what the DMV's records indicated as to the number of surrendered licenses might be for the period? Or maybe we will really need to wait to see what the 2010 Census records for LV pop figures.
You have all the good people moving out and the bad ones moving in.LOL
Hmmm...
From Uhaul's reservations site: 26 foot truck from Las Vegas to Austin TX = $1321. Austin to LV = $944. Looks like more people moving out of here than Austin.
vc...I am an AWS certified welder..I have a college degree..I have an education...I also have an education in a skilled trade.
Got to be Detroit. Forty-four schools will be closed in June. Unemployment is higher in Michigan than in Nevada and housing prices are worse in Detroit. Maybe the Pistons, Tigers, Lions & Red Wings move with them.
Vegas must be still the promised land. Ample 20-40K jobs to be had uneducated construction workers don't want according to vc. Plenty of empty houses and rentals available. Realtors, bankers, investors and car dealers get ready 'cause they'll be coming, ya hear! They'll be coming!
Sorry can't get rid of the images in Grapes of Wrath today.
So let me get this straight, none of you people or your families moved to Las Vegas? If you all hate it so much, why don't you move out?!? We have been planning a move for five years. Yes, my husband is retired but I will be doing a job search. We have very close friends in Vegas and look forward to it.. and by the way, Vegas does not have the market on a tough economy right now but people still are getting jobs and the economy is improving.
vc...
It was them highly edumacated ones who got us into this mess not construction workers.
Amazing, now all those unhappy,Vegas bashing, unemployed, ungrateful, soon to be ex vegans, can leave. Don't look back because a lot more rich, self supporting, stable retirees, are coming in to buy your foreclosed homes.
what a nice bunch of comments - based on them everyone should run any direction away from Las Vegas - come on folks lets all get along and quit talking garbage about others
Where the heck are they gonna get jobs? God Lord!? Are they outta their minds, do they still think the streets are paved with gold here?
Well I wasn't so sure if I was going to move to LV after all. I always thought I would - then wasn't too sure - and now - after seeing the posts of stevem, environprotector, Sgt. Rock, KillerB, and a few other lovers of compassion and care for the past few months, I've definitely decided. CAN'T WAIT TO GET THERE BEFORE THE YEAR IS OUT! Seriously - I've been scouting the place for a good spot and am narrowing down the field.
Really - no doubt LV has it's problems - and there are plenty of people here to always remind us what they are - and actually the rabble rousers are GOOD for communities to keep them on their toes! Government and communities need "constructive criticism".
From what I can sense from the stories and responses is that there are two distinct Nevadas: the gaming biz and the non-gaming biz. We have little influence on the gaming biz. But we can have a large influence on everything else. I think you're all pretty energized - negative or not - and that's paramount to a city's growth. And I'm looking forward to it...
I am glad to hear people still want to come to Vegas. Vegas still has a lot to offer and I am glad that I moved here in a U-Haul seven years ago. I look forward to the coming years when this is behind us and I hope that we will have learned from this experience. To all the people that have lost faith in Las Vegas, I will just say I hope the grass is greener on the other side of the fence for you.
chediski, and others considering moving to Las Vegas, you should take a good look at Anthem in Henderson, with homes, (many with spectacular views), for active adults, (Sun City), families, and celebrities, like Tony Curtis, and many others. I bet none of the complainers here live in Anthem.
You got to pick the right spot, and in the Las Vegas Valley, the right spot is Anthem.
All I can say to you folks who want to move here, just be ready for VERY disappointing job market, awful drivers, # 1 state for violent crime in a study just released yesterday (Mon. 4-5-2010). There is nothing here but depressed casinos, emptying out neighborhoods with neglected yards stripped interiors and squatters living in them shooting up god knows what kind of substances which make them homicidal crazies breaking into your home to rob you and murder your family for the money to support their habits. People here have had to arm themselves, to protect themselves, their families lives. It's not a good situation right now folks...
LV is that bad??? Try living in Cleveland,, aka: Little Detroit. The housing value here was cut by more than half....Ford Motor almost closed, but a stay was put in place for a temporary fix in BrookPark still jobs were cut... Companies are leaving in droves... sports teams can't win the BIG ONE... and the weather sucks! Man, sounds like I'll fit in LV next March just fine!
im sure theres some third world country thats worse off than living in vegas. when people bought in vegas they believed the system would continue to expand and provide positive growth for them and their families. but, like the imaginary WMD of the iraqi war, dreams evaporated and hopes dashed. the only help given was to the wall street and corporate merchants who created the entire disaster.
Notice that the complainers here never say where it's better.
Could it be because they are never happy anywhere?
Why stay, if the grass is so much greener elsewhere?
Love it, or leave it!
In the zips 89044 and 89052, we're lovin' it!
instead of telling the people that want to be here not to come, how about you whiners move out?
chediski Do not listen to Sgt.Rock he is a delusional idiot who has poisoned his little mind with Fox News,Rush and right wing radio. I doubt he knows what a Sgt.is.
As far as environprotector his posts reflect just how stupid he is.He fails to understand it takes people with money to buy and rent homes, purchase products and services and create businesses which will turn an economy around. In reality his juvenile rant about telling people to leave is a testament to his stupidity. I suppose Las Vegas would be just fine if he were the only one residing here.
stevem: Another little mind with a computer.
What none of these people understand is a lot of peole with disposable incomes move here for a variety of reason and do not need employment.
Somehow these numbers don't seem to jive. I'll wait a few months before I believe these numbers and I won't be surprised if they get revised. Of course LV looks like the Emerald City compared to Detroit, Cleveland etc.
What are you people confused about? I want(ed) to move there too. Look at all the great housing values to be found there now. One house I was looking at online dropped in price about 60% in the past few months. Thanks, rotten economy! :)
"You got to pick the right spot, and in the Las Vegas Valley, the right spot is Anthem."
If you like paying outrageous HOA fees, that is! But I would certainly agree that the south end of town is probably a bit safer and more 'neighborly' then areas to the north side of town...
My wife and I moved here from CA several years ago and are quite happy here. We are active in water sports and LOVE the hot weather in the summer. We enjoy Lake Mojave, the Colorado River, Lake Mead, Havasu and a couple of hours north is Lake Powell. We enjoy camping along the river and in Southern Utah in addition to driving up to the snow in less then an hour. Last winter was beautiful, it snowed about an inch or two on our home in NW LV. Most of the violent crime occurs on the strip where we rarely go except maybe to catch a show or eat out at a world class restaurant. The highways are much nicer then what we had in California, some of the locals don't realize how bad other areas are. I posted for a position here in LV to get out of Los Angeles after 20 years because of all the pollution, over crowding, heavy taxation, traffic and crime. My wife was accepted for a full time position with a solid company on her first interview. We purchased a beautiful home for a great price and pay no State income Tax. We love Las Vegas.
What's relevant is the age of those moving in, and where from. LV is an excellent choice for retirees, take that equity from elsewhere, even at a small loss and buy something cash out here.
A new resident moving in with money will have it easier compared to us who are already here. They will start fresh by buying homes at 60% discount and not saddled by upside down mortgages. These new residents will have a lot more spending money compared to us because they will be subsidized by us who put all those home upgrades and swimming pools before being foreclosed. So I am not surprised if there are more people coming in than people leaving Las Vegas.
Wow! Wasn't there just an article saying that 40 percent of Las Vegans would move if they could? Don't we have 14 percent unemployment? So my question is WHO are these people??
And the U-Hauls could very well be people from other states coming out here to help move their relatives/friends out who couldn't afford to do it on their own.
Or, just to be really cynical, the trucks are probably full of prostitutes and drugs. Special Delivery!
"Vegas does not have the market on a tough economy right now but people still are getting jobs and the economy is improving."
Is that 5-year pre planning stage here yet? Will you be moving soon? If it's not until another 5 years until you move to Vegas, then your shot at finding a job may improve. But if it is in the near future - good luck with that job hunt. And SUPER good luck if you are over 40.
And yes, plenty of places are in trouble right now, but not as bad as Vegas. It doesn't have the 2nd highest unemployment rate for nothing, nor the highest foreclosure rate in the country because it is "improving".
Good luck to you.
"The other side of the coin is "How many people have left here?-- then compare that to how many have moved here."
Good point. When I was prepping for my move last fall,
1. the Manager at the UHaul place on Rancho told me the amount of people renting trucks for long distance out of state moves was at the highest he ever saw in 5 years.
2. The bank tellers at two of the WAMU branches I went to said so many people were inquiring about their accounts in Vegas because they were leaving and wanted to know if everything will transfer over to a WAMU branch in another State.
3. When the cable guy came and got my equipment, he said they were never so busy as they were the month of September picking up their equipment because people were leaving Las Vegas.
And just today - I had to call DETR iN Carson City. The person I was dealing with and myself got to talking and even she said the amount of people on unemployment that have left Nevada in the last 6 months is unbelievable. She's never seen anything like it in all the years she has worked there.
So I don't know where these figures are coming from. Maybe it's because housing is so cheap right now and many took advantage of that or it's all those renters coming to rent those investor-bought properties. Maybe their figures came from the same guy who is telling us that housing prices have hit bottom and will start to go up soon?
I'm with Det_Munch...
To all you retirees, avoid downtown Las Vegas and especially North Las Vegas. I have in laws living in Summerlin, and they're afraid to go out at night.
The place to live is Henderson or Boulder City. Period. And not that more expensive. The house I bought new in 2001 lost half its equity, but so what? No HOA, no Section 8's, very strong city laws, mostly decent people of European or Hispanic origin. Don't mess with the Henderson police, however, they will shoot you dead for blinking your eyes. And don't run over the Firemen, they are so overpaid, they hang around strip malls looking for something to do and someone to meet.
Try Henderson if you want a good life. Cheaper than hell to live here. Avoid the other areas, or you will be sorry....
What some people fail to realize is that, LV economic crisis does not affect everybody. And all the complainers on here making negative comments about Las Vegas, well, you are not doing any justice to yourselves by doing this. If you want to scare people off who are or thinking about moving here then go ahead. But Las Vegas needs the revenue. And if it's the Economy that is making your life here so miserable then move and give up your jobs and homes for those who want to be here.
I am SOOO effen tired of all the posters on here with their predictable "If you don't like it here then move" comments Ive been here since '59 probably before most of them were even conceived, and I have the RIGHT to be upset over what has happened to this once beautiful spot in the Mojave. You little youngsters just zip it and show some respect!!
I live right by a Roberto's Taco Shop and love it.
Burrittobandit2 - just HAD to look up the Taco Shop and the menu looks great and cheap to me!! One of my first stops next time!
To all the friendly people in Vegas welcoming us, first of all, we actually have had a 10 year plan but took a detour from Philly to Vegas to take care of ill parents. We do not live beyond our means (no flat screen TV or Blackberry), however, we do love to travel and golf. When our house was obviously over-inflated we did not take out 2nd and 3rd mortgages to buy things we did not need with money we did not have. We are not youngsters (my husband is 74 and retired). My field is healthcare. We have been visiting friends in Vegas for 20 years and have also seen lots of changes, good and bad. My friend's daughter lives in Summerlin and we have visited. They are NOT afraid to go out of their house at night... Sorry all you naysayers, we are looking forward to moving to Vegas, just as you all or your families were. Of course some people are just miserable no matter....

Once in awhile, we get posters like john2010 who is full of hate and I just use my "mind over matter" technique. I don't mind his post and it does not matter, and sooner or later he takes his medication and he will calm down.
Yes Baby! LET PEOPLE COME TO THE VALLEY AND MAKE SURE OUR PLACE DOES NOT COLLAPSE!!
But soon is about to come a person who WANTS TO DELIVER REAL CAPITALISM, IDEAS, AND HOPE FOR THIS AMAZING VALLEY!!! That person is me!!
Lets bring people and START A NEW GENERATION OF THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY!! Here are the plans:
1. Eliminate those wealth redistributing programs that PAY PEOPLE TO FAIL AND REDUCE PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY including Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, etc.... HAVE PRIVATE GROUPS HELP PEOPLE OUT!!
2. REDUCE LABOR LAWS!! That means unnecessary min wage, OHSA, and all the other mess regulations!! MAKE THE LABOR MARKET COMPETITIVE!!
3. ELIMIATE TAXES AND HAVE MAJOR DEREGULATION!!!
Have public safety and infrastructure funded other involuntary ways!! Oh yes.. STOP THE CRAP FANNIE AND FREDDIE BULLSH*T THAT WRECKED THE VALLEY'S MORTGAGES!!!
4. ABOLISH THE CCSD AND ALL THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENTS!!! Stop those cowards for WASTING OUR TAX FUNDS AND PROVIDE POOR SERVICE TO YOUNG INDIVIDUALS!!! Deliver competition, choice, and PROFIT DRIVEN INNOVATION OUR LEARNING SYSTEMS!!!
5. EDUCATE THE VALLEY ABOUT INVESTING AND $$$$ MANAGEMENT!!! Help the valley gain its investments spirit, avoid liabilities, and HAVE $$$ WORK FOR THEM!!
6. REDUCE PLANNING DEPT. ROLE IN PLANNING OUR CITIES. Let private companies do more of the work and design mixed-use, diverse towns that provide transportation choice, energy efficient, have social gathering places, and characterized by architectural appeal!!!
ALL THESE IDEAS WILL HAPPEN AND STAY IN VEGAS SOON!! SOMEDAY THE VALLEY WILL BE THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD FOR THESE MOVERS!! OH YEAH!!!
john2010 your comment is absolutely hilarious and true.
Furthermore, this town is full with wing nuts strung out on who knows what. Doesn't matter if it's a senior citizen driving 55 in the middle of the 215 strung out on Bush Prescription D or a drunk stripper driving here car into the median on LV Blvd. and Sunset. at 6 a.m. Vegas probably has the most diverse socioeconomic culture in the country, and all have one thing in common: They're all looking for the gold one way or the other.
Friendliness and courtesy is another attribute that's lacking here and plentiful in Omaha. Just read some of the posts on this forum. I've been at many places which grew on me faster than Vegas. Just took me about 3-4 years to get used to the bull... Moving out here from Telluride,Colorado (elev.8750ft) beginning August was quite a culture shock and took some getting used to all the brown and thrash. I do not recommend to anybody moving out here in the middle of the Summer. Seems like people in smaller towns with less are happier, though, than people who got everything at their disposal.
Finally, anybody is welcome out here, disposable income or not. You'll fit in somewhere in the Valley.
Cyrus992, you're on to something!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! coupe_devile!!!
PLEASE GIVE ME THE CHANCE AND SUPPORT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS EXCITING VALLEY!!!
I am only 17, from Orange County, CA dying to DELIVER THE NEXT GENERATION OF LAS VEGAS!!!
Someday just like MLK, I will preach to thousands across the valley and hopefully it will happen in the front view of the Bellagio fountains!!
Got any advice or help?
Cyrus992 - love that energy! OK, now. What you need to do is put down in writing all of your plans and how they work. You know - do all the financials and all the research and solve all of LV's problems. Housing, welfare, crime, hunger, runaways, etc., stuff like that. Put it in writing and then send it to the Vegas City Manager and Clark County managers and see what they think of it. Then stick with it and work, and rework, and rework, until you feel you have something worth voting on. From there, find an official that you believe in and put the document in his/her hands. Then champion it and pour tons of activism in it for the voters.
That's how you get things done and fire like yours is important. Now if no one wants to help, well, then run for office yourself and get your ideas enacted. That's also how it's done.
Along the way, as you try to get this done, don't be swayed or diverted by "special interests" or tit for tat kind of maneuvers. Stay the course and be true to your desires for the betterment of the community. That's a part of getting things done.
Do not get involved in relationships, a "normal" full-time job, or continuing education for a few years until you have acheived your goals. It will take all your time and skill to see your plans come to fruition.
Do not allow other thoughts or view points, (exception being how to destroy other said view points), to deter or detract from your written plan. I mean - you already have figured out all the answers so I say go for it while you can!
Cyruss, all kidding aside, I am THRILLED that a young person with such PASSION exists and seems to genuinely care about any community. Really - this is what the country is supposed to be full of - young idealists with a dream of a better future - and people like yourself are sorely lacking.
But spend some time seriously reading and studying the social and political issues at hand in college if at all possible. Blast away at the system and see why things are the way they are. It's not as simple as rich and poor and more vs. less government and the haves vs. the have nots. There are political systems than address those issues which had been rejected by the founding fathers for various reasons.
Take that energy - that fire and enthusiasm and go to school, get a degree in political science, and work your way up the political ladder to change things for what you believe in. It's a very long and for many unrewarding road but their love for their country supercedes their personal gain.
Vegas would be lucky to get you.
Vegas is at least lucky to have you also!!
Seriously... I have no plans graduating college.....
I HAVE TO RESCUE AND HELP THE VALLEY NOW!!! I dont plan on wasting $$$ and being in debt with this forceful, monopolistic education system.. College is not for me... My education lies with you guys in the Las Vegas Valley!!
Hopefully Day trading penny stocks and flipping Las Vegas foreclosure properties will be my source of income. That way better than being in student loan debt!
Do you if how I can start an organizing group where I can make speeches and run events across the valley! COME ON!! The crazier Vegas gets the better!!
Oh my god John2010 yes I worked my butt of serving my country for 31 years...and now i am RETIRED....can I please have your permission to move to YOUR city?
The illegals must be crossing the border with U-hauls now.
The data they used and reported is inaccurate. U-Haul is constantly sending empty trucks here to supply the demand for people moving out. There was another article a few months ago that described this very thing. Realestate people and bankers will stop at nothing to move the almost 100k empty homes off thier inventories that aren't yet listed, including articles such as this one. Notice the article is by Sun Staff. Who might that be??? Aditionally, with reported unemplyment of 13% who in their right mind would come looking for a job in this one industry town. These kinds of articles are the same kind that fueled the housing bubble to begin with, it looks as if they will never give up.
I definitely never drank the water in Philly. Remind me not to drink the Vegas water - don't want to turn into a bitter, bigoted racist, or just plain crazy!
just bought my first house in southern highlands...moved from Cleveland 2.5 years ago.
I love it out here! The traffic, for a big city, is Fantastic. The gyms (LVAC) are the nicest I have ever seen. Weather is great...no more soaking your shirt with humidity. We have a lake, a mountain to ski on and LA, Phoenix, San Diego, Santa Barbara within driving distance. I would never move back to the midwest and am definitely happy with my move to Vegas.
*I work in the insurance industry and am not part of the casino/construction crew that is getting hit the hardest out here.
When I vistited Burbank in November,I saw a U-Haul place advertisong specials to rent a truck to Vegas . I remember wondering why????
Isn't Cyrus992 that young kid that's always posting??? Like he's 17 or 18 years old? (or so he says) And from Cali?
"*I work in the insurance industry and am not part of the casino/construction crew that is getting hit the hardest out here."
Ahhh...the insurance industry. The next industry to make a ****load of money off the middle class by gouging them with ridiculously high insurance premiums. I guess your job is secure.
Here is the report. I don't understand this article given the report.
This week, U-Haul International, Inc. released results of the annual U-Haul National Migration Trend Report that reflects the nation's top growth areas for families that moved during 2009.
The results indicate that for cities with more than with 5,000 families moving, Bronx, N.Y. had the highest percentage of growth, with 17.22 percent.
In a press release, John "J.T." Taylor, U-Haul president of Phoenix Operations, said, "The report, reflective of growth patterns in the United States during 2009, was compiled based on nationwide trends in cities of all sizes and reflects communities with more than 5,000 families moving in or out of the area. Growth cities were then determined by calculating the percentage of inbound moves vs. outbound moves for each area."
The 2009 Top U.S. Growth Cities Report was compiled from more than 1 million U-Haul one-way truck transactions between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009.
The top 10 growth areas include:
1. BRONX, N.Y. - 17.22%
2. HOUSTON, Texas - 10.80%
3. PORTLAND, Ore. - 10.16%
4. DALLAS, Texas - 9.48%
5. LOS ANGELES, Calif. - 7.87%
6. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - 6.88%
7. TAMPA, Fla. - 6.76%
8. ORLANDO, Fla. - 6.43%
9. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - 5.84%
10.VAN NUYS, Calif. - 5.80%

These comments represent a wide range of valid viewpoints even though they may seemingly contradict one another. Some people are doing well and loving it in Las Vegas, and for (probably) a majority of people the outlook is not so good. Las Vegas has always been a mixed bag. Always! This was a very interesting and informative discussion. I hope that the people who want to move to Vegas inform themselves properly.
Are the reports based only on U-Hauls incoming vehicles to Las Vegas or does that included vehichles leaving?
I will say working in the retail industry that over the past year I have noticed alot of newer people moving to Las Vegas.People calling from out of state wanting pricing and actually purchasing before they mover here.I would also say that it is a relatively good break down between younger and older retired people.
I moved here about 15 months ago and trully had never seen a city in a deep recession.I lived in the south most all my life and the city I come from is the Distribution hub of the nation.
Having I-40 running from east coast to west coast and I-55 from New Orleans to Chicago and the Mississippi River also where barges going up and down stream stop in Memphis as a port.Fed Ex was founded and is based out of Memphis.
Memphis is usally one of the last cities in this country to feel the effects of a recession and normally comes out quickly. So in saying all that moving to Las Vegas I could really see the effects of the recession on this city and saw it quickly.Matter in fact I saw it within the first few days of being here.Just all the unfinished construction projects in the outter parts of the city. Then the FountainBlea
fiasco and the lay-offs were rampid through out the gamming industry.I was amazed how sheltered I was in Memphis when it came to a recession.
I hope that those who have survived here in Las vegas during this recession have learned a great deal I know I have.
To here this story is very encouraging and for once we are hearing a positive towards this Cities recovery. My wife has spent 16 years in the gamming industry and has yet to find a job and it gets discouraging going on interview after interview with no prevail and I know there are thousands of people who can say the samething.I extend my best wishes to thise who are still hanging on by a thread.
This city needs help from the Corperate Giants. The city of Las Vegas made these guys and they need to relize it.Harrah's,MGM,Sands,Boyd,Stations and all the others need to step up and provide above and beyond service to its patrons and to do this would to be put people back to work.
Vegas isn't perfect but anyplace really isn't perfect either. Moving here nearly 25 years ago was the best thing I ever did...Growing up in California in the 60's and 70's was great but I cannot imagine living there now.
Like some of the other posters say, the south valley is THE best place to be too. The rule of thumb when I moved here was "don't live anywhere north of the 95". Still pretty much true today.
Det_Munch.... yes that is me.... the one from Califorina...
But serioiusly... the valley needs improvements and upgrades in education, capitalism, urban design, and investment opportunities TO GET MORE PEOPLE MOVING HERE TO GROW!!
So please lets come together and make a difference!! Dont rely on parties and groups to help!!

There is a very SIMPLE answer to one of your above posts
When the CityCenter had its last inspection 6,000 of the 9,000 construction workers were travel card union, and they are the ones that created the mass exodus, and since unemployment is federally mandated, they just leave this state for work, and still continue collecting no matter where they live
I knew about 15 guys, and 9 of them have already left, and the other 6 can never leave due to being so far underwater
peace out
I live in Chicago and I also have a house in Henderson in the Seven Hills area. I am retired and I love it in Las Vegas. You talk about trouble areas Chicago had over 40 shootings just a week ago. There are beautiful spots in Chicago but no matter where you go there is always problems. I am sure that people that were born and raised in Nevada just must lose their mind when they see what has happened to their state. I would feel the same way they do. People that cannot control their gambling habits should move to a state that has no gambling because its not the casinos fault if you walk in and blow your pay check, they did not twist your arm. You have to blame yourself for that. The only fault I have with the Las Vegas and Henderson areas are they tried to build to fast and it seems like it backfired so far.
Again this story is BS! It was just on the news a few days ago, {national news} that 27,000 people have left Nevada and it ranks #2 on the list of cities that have lost population.
Your newspapers stink!
