Secretary of state to take over business license role

CARSON CITY – Secretary of State Ross Miller is reminding companies his office will take over the issuance of state business licenses Oct. 1 and the annual fee will go from $100 to $200.
Miller said the 2009 Legislature transferred the duties from the state Taxation Department to his office.
“The consolidation of the business license program with the other services my office provides is the first step towards creating an online service like no other state offers,” he said. Businesses also must file an annual list of officers.
In addition, the state Division of Mortgage Lending says a bond or security backup will be required for mortgage brokers, loan modification consultants and foreclosure consultants effective Oct. 1.
Commissioner Joseph Waltuck said a 2009 law requires this as another protection to consumers. And failure to comply could result in fines and a loss of licenses.
