Las Vegas to get near-record heat today

Temperatures to hit 104 today and 102 Monday

Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 | 7:06 a.m.

Don't turn off your air conditioner yet — the Las Vegas Valley will get more triple-digit heat again today.

Temperatures were starting out this morning in the low 70s at McCarran International Airport. But they were expected to climb to 100 degrees by 2 p.m. and hit 104 by 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

That would tie the record high for today's date of 104, set in 1947. The normal high for today's date is 90 degrees.

Monday will bring another hot and sunny day, with the high climbing in the valley to 102 degrees, the weather service said.

Tuesday's high will reach only 95 degrees. The weather service said widespread gusty southwest winds will develop across most the region on Tuesday as a strong Pacific storm swings into the West Coast.

Hazardous fire weather conditions are likely across much of the region Tuesday afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

Strong downslope winds are possible for the Spring Mountains west of Las Vegas on Tuesday night, forecasters said.

Gusty winds will shift from southwest to north on Tuesday night and early Wednesday behind a cold front that will sweep across the region and bring a dramatic drop in temperatures, forecasters said.

Wednesday's morning low temperature will fall to around 65 degrees. And Wednesday's high will reach only 79 degrees, the weather service said.

Thursday's morning low will drop to 59 degrees, with Thursday's high climbing to 78 degrees, forecasters said.
