David Diaz, right, of Chicago, Ill., knocks down Jose Armando Santa Cruz, of Lincoln Heights, Calif., during the 10th round of their WBC Interim Lightweight title fight boxing match at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, Saturday, Aug.12, 2006. Diaz won with a TKO in the round.

Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 | 11 p.m.

CHICAGO — Former lightweight champion David Diaz returned from a 15-month absence to earn a majority decision victory over Jesus Chavez on Saturday night.

The 33-year-old Diaz seemed to take control during the ninth and 10th rounds, likely sealing the victory. Judge Mike Fitzgerald scored the fight 95-95, but Mauro DiFiore and Scott Dexter gave Diaz the decision by scores of 97-93 and 96-94, respectively.

Diaz, a Chicago native, hadn’t been in the ring since being knocked out by Manny Pacquiao on June 28, 2008, in Las Vegas. Despite his 15-month absence, Diaz (35-2-1) looked spry through all 10 grueling rounds against Chavez (44-6-0), also a former lightweight champion who grew up in Chicago.

Juan Carlos Martinez (17-11-1) won the co-main event against Jose Andres Hernandez (22-5-0) by unanimous decision in a junior lightweight bout.

Kratingdaenggym wins WBA super-bantamweight title

Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym of Thailand has stopped Bernard Dunne of Ireland in the third round to win the WBA super-bantamweight title.

The Thai landed a trio of powerful left hooks in the third round on Saturday in Dublin, each time sending Dunne to the mat. The referee stopped the fight after the third knockdown as blood flowed from the Dubliner’s nose and left ear.

The 28-year-old Poonsawat (39-1) had waited 18 months for his shot at the title. It was his first professional victory outside Thailand. Before the fight he predicted he would knock out the hometown favorite within seven rounds.

The 29-year-old Dunne (28-2) captured the WBA title on March 21 with an 11th-round knockout of Panama’s Ricardo Cordoba, also at the O2 Arena in Dublin’s Docklands.

Pascal retains WBC light heavyweight title

Local star Jean Pascal stopped Italy’s Silvio Branco in the 10th round to retain the WBC light heavyweight title Friday night in Montreal, Canada.

Pascal (24-1), from Laval, knocked down the 43-year-old Branco (59-10-2) once in seventh and twice more in the 10th before the Italian’s corner threw in the towel to put an end to the one-sided bout.

The 26-year-old Pascal won the title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Montreal-based Adrian Diaconu on June 19.

Jon Jones defends belt for third time, downs rival Rashad Evans

UFC 145 Jon Jones had already gotten past three former light heavyweight champions in the last 13 months — Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Lyoto Machida. Now, Rashad Evans can be added to the list. Jones put Evans away in Atlanta with a unanimous decision victory, taking a combined 13 rounds out of a possible 15 combined on the three judges' scorecards. Jones rebuffed all of Evans' takedown attempts to keep the fight against his former training partner standing. Jones' striking was at another level, as he flawlessly mixed elbows, jabs and leg kicks to keep Evans guessing for the duration of the fight.
