Letter to the editor:

UNLV football well worth hassle of parking

Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 | 2:04 a.m.

Regarding Joan A. Marcotte’s Thursday letter to the editor in the Las Vegas Sun, headlined “UNLV’s football stadium isn’t fan-friendly”:

Ms. Marcotte, an East Coast transplant, wrote that she attended a UNLV football game about eight years ago but that she will not attend again.

I went to Saturday night’s thrilling victory against Hawaii and had a great time. I got to the south box office 90 minutes before kickoff, waited less than two minutes in line, and bought a $35 ticket that put me on the 40-yard line three rows behind the Rebel bench. It couldn’t have been a much better seat. After the game, Phillip Payne, who had just caught the winning touchdown pass minutes earlier, came over to the stands and gave one of his gloves to a little boy who had been sitting near me ... very nice.

Yes, the parking lot is still unpaved and leaving the lot after the game requires some patience. But the product on the field, including the Rebel Girls and the UNLV band, far outweighed getting dust on my car.

The previous Saturday I attended the Army-Duke football game at West Point. Most parking at West Point, though paved, is expensive and a very long walk from the stadium; the brand of football I saw there left plenty to be desired.

But UNLV football is on the rise; it is exciting and it deserves our support.
