LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Why zealots won’t give president a chance

Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009 | 2:03 a.m.

Jan. 20, 2009, saw the end of one of the worst presidencies in modern times and the beginning of one of the most hopeful ones. Barack Obama, the first black president, was inaugurated into the highest office in the land. This man, who the majority of the American people voted into office, was and still is full of hope, and he believes he can make positive changes in the best country on earth.

He came into office with two wars raging, the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression, including an unprecedented housing crisis and unemployment rates that most of us have never seen. Basically, our president has to fill a hole the size of an ocean. Why are the Republicans and anyone who will listen to them not giving this man a chance? I’ll tell you why — sour grapes — plain and simple.

Members of the Republican Party, which lost the Senate in 2006 and both the House and the presidency in 2008, are acting like a bunch of spoiled children with their town-hall yelling matches and their ridiculous “death panel” claims thanks to Sarah Palin, who apparently didn’t like the heat so she got out of the proverbial Alaskan kitchen (lucky Alaskans).

Now, and I cannot even believe this, Joe Wilson, a Republican congressman from South Carolina, yells “You lie!” like a spoiled brat on a playground — and these far-right zealots didn’t want school children to watch a speech by this country’s own president?

If the Republicans keep up this type of boorish, childish behavior, they will guarantee themselves a spot in the minority for a very long time. If the GOP really wanted to do more for itself and the American public, as it espouses, it would roll up its sleeves, stop the blaming, name-calling and scare tactics, and then present viable options and try to work with the Democrats to solve this country’s numerous problems.

  1. Nonsense. If the Republican party is so inconsequential, why don't the Democrats grow a pair and start passing legislation? After all, they've got the White House, a big majority in the House and nearly a fillibuster-proof majority in the Senate. What are they waiting for?

Or could it be that the Democrats are cowards who are afraid to go it alone with their Socialist agenda, for fear of having to "own" those programs and legislation all by themselves after they blow up in their face? They don't want to be held solely responsible at the polls in 2010, 2012 and beyond, so they keep begging Republicans to join in and share the blame.

No dice. Letter writers and the Socialist Sun can keep crying about the Joe Wilson issue every day for a year. It's not going to make one bit of difference. The health care boondoggle won't pass. Not because Republicans won't get on board, but because the Democrats are too cowardly to stand up for themselves.

  2. Acting like children?

    Who is doing the whining?

    You and the Democrats are.

    You have the White House.

You have strong majorities in the House and Senate.

    Stop the whining.

    It gets tiring.

  3. Ha, Ha, What have you been smokin'?

Government is the problem, not the solution.

  4. "Why are the Republicans and anyone who will listen to them not giving this man a chance."

"...anyone who will listen to them... " read unhappy Democrats and independents

They are trying to protect our lives as we want it and protect our children.

Real simple - its self preservation.

  5. The wailer wails: "...he believes he can make positive changes in the best country on earth."

    Two words: Bull Crap...

  6. The heading should read:

Why idots write into the LV SUN...

  7. And the zealots post here.

  8. Well, the letter writer did get one thing right; January 20th 2009

  9. The traditional Republican party is dead, not slain by the Democrats, but by those who pretended to be conservatives. The traditional Republican party was a part in the constructing and maintaining the physical and social infrastructures of our society. Those things that now call themselves republican could as well be KGB sleepers for the damage they have done to the USA. They are not through yet, they want the USA House burnt to the ground. Yes, they want America in ashes--just listen to the ranting and raving of their leadership and the brownshirt pawn followers who are suicidal to themselves and their own children. Think!

  10. This letter is truly an example of racism run amok on the pages of the LVSun.

  11. ghost: I see you're at it again with your leftist nonsense. Stink!

  12. Racism at it's worst...

When you are unable to debate an issue, bring up the race card...

  13. Actually, the commander sometimes makes more sense then the writers of these letters to the editor.

  14. "If the GOP really wanted to do more for itself and the American public, "

Yeah, well, that's the problem. It really doesn't. The GOP leadership is full of pathological rich people who care only about being rich and powerful, and becoming richer and more powerful, and getting richer yet, and being more rich than the next rich guy. These are the adult versions of the most obnoxious, immature, spoiled brat children in America. That's who runs the party. Ethics is not part of the picture. Public service is not part of the picture. To these people, the government exists to support a sort of capitalism that keeps them wealthy and continues to make them wealthier and wealthier, at the expense of the average citizen. Exploiting the citizenry is a mean to more riches for the richest, so it's okay. That's the leadership of the Republican Party. They blab about morals and abortion and gun rights and freedom and all kinds of other things they don't actually care about, only to sucker in large numbers of people to vote for them so they can carry on the one and only thing they do care about: making their rich selves and rich friends richer.

  15. "If the GOP really wanted to do more for itself and the American public," they would give all of their money and wealth to the Democrats and their constituents.

Both the Democrat and Republican parties exist in the stink of their excrement.

Figure it out and don't finance these two out of step organizations.

Support the best candidate, and be an Independent voter and thinker...

  16. If you are 100% anti-socialism then stop walking on our sidewalks, stop driving on our streets and highways, stop using our airports, stop drinking tap water, stop accepting your unemployment checks, stop accepting workmens compensation when injured in the workplace, stop accepting your Social Security check, and stop accepting Medicare. If I have left anything out please add to this list.

  17. You are a stakeholder:
If you own stock in a corporation
If you pay dues to an organization
If you pay dues to a homeowners association
If you pay taxes to a unit of government
If you hold U.S. Dollars, U.S. Savings Bonds, etc.

And since you are a stakeholder in the U.S., then you just might have a financial interest in and just a little ownership in the United States.

  18. Ghostcommander-I would gladly give up all of these things you mention if the government goons with guns would not come out and make me pay taxes to support them.
I unfortunately have been forced against my will for years to pay for Social Security and Medicare which I am entitled to since I paid for it. Everything else, sidewalks, streets, and most of the things you mention should be paid for by user fees. In fact, I think the government holds the property owner responsible for maintaining the sidewalks in front of his home, not the taxpayer. Roads should be paid for by gas tax, but gas tax should not pay for transit which should be paid for at the farebox. Airports are paid for by taxes we pay when we pay for our tickets and additional fees charged to the airlines which are also paid for through our tickets. We also pay directly for the water we drink because we are billed by the utility company.

What I object to is paying for Medicade, Aid to Freeloaders Deadbeats and Chislers (AFDC), Public education, a dismal failure (which should be paid for by parents), food stamps, Section 8 housing, income tax credits etc. I think government billing for the services you actually use is the only fair and just way to finance government. Judging by the tone of your post, it sounds like you may agree with me.

  19. This article doesn't deserve a response. It speaks for itself and the author, moreover; the Las Vegas Sun will end up like the rest of the lunatic papers. Reporters looking for another job because they ruined what once use to be an excellent news source.

As to you Daryl Morris, you should be ashamed of yourself and your journalistic reporting. Your article is a good example of liberal media bias attempting for force feed the Democrats hateful, spiteful, racial tendencies down our throats. What you are failing to realize is there are more intelligent people in the USA than liberals. Obama may have gotten their lazy followers off their bungers and voted but it surely doesn't mean these animals will ever vote again. By the time 2012 come around most of those who voted for this liar in office will either be prison, on the lamb, or too cracked up to remember election day.

  20. Hey, its2hot......Morris sent in a letter to the editor...it is not a news article.

The Sun has the perfect right and does not violate any fairness to list whatever it wants to on its editorial pages.

  21. sgtRock:

How right you are. Didn't see letter to editor.

Glad this person dosen't work for the Sun. If he did the paper would go to hell in a handbag!

  22. ghostcommander: Your assessment of the status of the Republican party is unfortunately correct. I wonder how long it will take the Democrats to begin to abuse their power as it is inevitable. Obama will have two terms of easy governing. The Republicans seem resolved to even a further downward trend now that they answer to Limbaugh and have hung their hopes on the "teabaggers", "birthers", and anti-socialists extremeists. The "Party of No" could turn into the Party of Slow (witted).

  23. Now Willie, you don't really want us to believe your rant on those very unfortunate Republicans, particularly when you call them the names that you do.

Name calling has become the Modus Operandi of those on the left who would rather call names then debate on the facts.

  24. George Bush didn't get a break in eight years, Daryl, so stop complaining and man up.

  25. LarryVegas: The two party system is absolutely necessary for our form of government. It may not be the Republican Party for the next generation. If they can't offer some constructive contribution in the next few years the Democrats will greatly abuse the situation. The pendulum goes back and forth but I've never seen it swing so far in one party's direction and I don't see any republican candidates capable of keeping the dems. in check. Voters are voting anti-Republican, not pro-Democrat.

    /14/resentment

This article explains what we are blogging about, much more than I could. This is an eye opener.

  27. ITS ALL BECAUSE OBAMA IS HALF WHITE....THERE I SAID IT.

  28. Hey JD... Which half? There,I asked it...

  29. THE BAD HALF.

  30. Here's why I gave the President six months and no more:

No substance. All hype and hustle. Memories of Ayers and Wright caused by Van Jones.

  31. mikegino:The Dow is up over 3,000 points since April 9th. Obama is saving your economic butt.
    More hype and hustle, please!

  32. Civics lesson 1)

The president does not improve the economy.

  33. Willie:
I voted pro-Democrat as did my friends.
    Democrats are just better people.

If Jesus were here today he'd be a Democrat.

  34. Teamster-- you can't be serious? Wow, the party that wants to remove the 10 commandments from courthouses, is run by the homo-sexual lobby, is ok with abortion (including late term or at birth) would rather burn the bible than allow it to be discussed in public, wants to force people into government slavery by taxing them for everything they have because they are successful and driven to succeed. Let's see, what else is there too list? well more than is room in this blog. Anyone else want to add to the list, please do just to show how ignorant Teamsters statement is. Oh and he would love the worship of false idols which is promoted by and used by the democrats. Barack Insane Obama is God according to a lot of democrats. I only hope you are being sarcastic.

  35. OMG!

Jesus did not have one inch of interest in politics. The Rome government was brutal and merciless and occupied that area that he lived in.

The Jewish puppet government was very corrupt.

    He did nothing about either.

There was one attempt to get him to answer a political question and he gave a wise answer that removed himself from politics.

Just a FYI, it is doubtful that Jesus was a Republican or a Democrat and he definitely did not preach that one needed to set up a or takeover government to help people nor he did preach that lowering taxes would solve everything, too.

He focused on the individuals and not on groups.

If everybody followed what he preached then there would be absolutely no need for government.

There would be no crime, no war and people would be helping people instead of bureaucrats who belong to a union earning a salaries and benefits that are totally out-of-control and filling out forms pushing one person to the next person without regard to their true needs or attempting to fix the root problems.

  36. SgtRock:

Jesus said we should feed the poor and
help the sick. That's what Democrats do.

  37. You are all wrong, Jesus would be an independent and govern from the middle...

    How about:

A rolling stone gathers no moss...

A bird in the bush is worth two in the hand....

It's warmer in the winter then in the mountains...

  38. Daryl Morris this is what pisses me off about people like you! Why can't you just get it through your thick, ignorant skull that Obama told me in his campaign what he stands for? He does NOT give me hope and I do NOT believe he can or will make positive changes to this country. I do not like or agree with the majority of the policies that he promotes. Daryl, do you think this may be a reason that I do not "give him a chance"? Or does it have to be that I am a zealot, a racist, and the plethora of other names you throw at people who do not worship the Obama? It's people like YOU who will ensure that Obama does not get voted in for a second term.

  39. Earth to Daryl: he wasn't voted into office by a majority of the American people. And he doesn't have to fill a hole the size of an ocean, whatever that means. Do you work for Acorn, Sir?

FYI: the Pentagon is aghast at Obama's unilateral disarmament plans. Is he the Manchurian Candidate after all?

  40. Daryl Morris is a moron. This guy must be educated by the Las Vegas school district. Complete moron.

  41. Daryl Morris:

I bet it will be a long time before you sign your real name to anything you write to the Sun. These morons will disrespect you till their tongues are hanging out. Me? I disagree with just about everything you said. However, just like John Wayne said 'I will fight to my death to defend your right to say it' Or was it Claude Rains?

  42. It's true our side didn't give George Bush a chance for 8 years. And whether the critics of Obama like it or not Barry has 4 years to prove that he has a better plan for our country's future. If he fails the Republicans can regain the White House again and continue with their policies that have brought us to this situation that Barry is trying to fix.Yes Obama's critics want him to fail but I would be a liar to say that I didn't gloat when no WMD's weren't found in Iraq or when no ties were found between Al Qiada and Iraq. And I had to roll my eyes at the handling of the aftermath of Katrina. The treatment of returning vets and the condition of Walter Reed Hospital. The failure of Wall Street and the greed of Enron and Bernie Madoff.
One bright spot,it was suggested by the last administration of lower oil prices as a result of our invading Iraq.( I admit I was elated when a barrel of oil rose over $100 a barrel. I own shares in an Energy Fund.)
I was not particularly proud when George and Cheney ignored the Constitution and Geneva Convention.Or the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame and the pardon of Scooter Libby.
But never mind all my previous noise. Barry is here to stay for another 3 1/2 years. If he gets it wrong we will have a different president in 2012.If his policies work we will hear it for another 4 years of how crappy the lives of his critics have it.

  43. So Jesus and Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy are in the same party?

  44. Our way is best,No our way is best.Neither party has a clue on how to run this country, and it dont matter what color the president is,untill these idiots see that both have good ideas, but in there whole, its not gonna work. Now maybe take this out,and add the other persons idea in,now that might make sense! What Obooma did was promise change, and he hasnt done a thing!Same crooks in office as we just took out! This country needs fresh ideas, and a new approach to THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE!!! LIFE!LIBERTY!AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!But with all the current polititions in office(and that includes both parties)that dream fades more and more every passing year.

  45. This is the last time I'll look at the comments about articles or letters in the SUN -- what a pack of encapsulated sourbellies you are, talking smack to each other like schoolyard tough guys. It's discouraging and depressing to see this endless stream of bile. Go ahead and squirt some on me if you want, I won't see it. I'm gone.

  46. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhpritz!
