Sun editorial:

Ugly opposition to Obama

Unapologetic Rep. Joe Wilson has disgracefully embraced his newfound notoriety

Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 | 2:07 a.m.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., created a firestorm when he yelled “You lie!” during President Barack Obama’s speech to Congress last week.

At the urging of Republican leadership, Wilson called the White House to apologize and spoke with Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. Wilson, however, refused to apologize to his House colleagues.

Wilson broke House rules by calling the president a liar, and in the past other House members have apologized on the floor for similar conduct. Because Wilson refused to apologize to his colleagues, the House passed a resolution Tuesday disapproving of his remarks.

Wilson, however, remains undeterred — he seems to be enjoying the national notoriety and the far right’s acclaim. He was caught on video autographing photos of himself confronting the president. And Wilson told The Washington Times on Wednesday that he had raised “significantly over” $1 million since the incident, largely due to the support of right-wing radio talk show hosts.

Wilson has become the darling of the anti-Obama crowd, which is something no one should want because of the racism that has infused the movement. Former President Jimmy Carter told NBC News he believes “an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man.”

“It’s an abominable circumstance and grieves me and concerns me very deeply,” Carter said.

Some of Obama’s critics prove the point. It is sickening to see detractors waving posters with racial slurs or depicting the president as a communist or Adolf Hitler.

Unfortunately, Wilson has played dumb. In the Washington Times interview, Wilson wouldn’t even address repeated questions about racism, saying that the focus should be on “the issues.”

But Wilson has blown his chance to ever be taken seriously in discussing “the issues” because of his failure to confront and address the vitriol, the hatred and the ugly racism that Obama’s shrillest opponents have come to represent.
