100-degree heat heading to Las Vegas this weekend
But today’s temperatures just a notch above normal
Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 | 7:11 a.m.
A hot blast of late-summer heat will move in to the Las Vegas Valley this weekend. But if you've got outdoor activities planned today, like a festival or a football game, the weather should cooperate.
Sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid 90s are expected today for the valley, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service said a slow-moving, low-pressure system will move to eastern Arizona today, keeping thunderstorms just east of the region.
Temperatures were starting out this morning in the low 70s and were expected to climb to a high of near 95 degrees this afternoon, forecasters said. The normal high temperature for today's date is 93 degrees and the record is 108 degrees, set in 1937.
Hotter weather is heading in to the valley by the end of the week.
High pressure will persist near central California, creating a dry northeast flow of air over the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert, the weather service said.
That's going to bring warmer temperatures in for the last weekend of the summer, with the highs reaching near or above 100 degrees Saturday through Monday, forecasters said.

PeterGun,
Thanks for starting the discussion on average heat out here. I've only been here for a couple of summers, so I have to fall back on the records kept by the National Weather Service office here in Las Vegas.
Like lvenforcer and planetmars already said above, the records shows most of the high heat cooks us out here in July and August, then tapers off a little in September.
I went to the April records and found the hottest day that month was April 22, with 94 degrees. So you're right about us starting to get some hot weather that month.
In May, most of the days had highs in the 90s. The highs for the month were May 17, which hit 102, and May 18, which hit 103.
We had eight 100 or 100-plus degree days in June, with it hitting 108 on June 29 and June 30.
Then it got hot.
July had only four days when the temperature didn't go above 100 degrees. The hottest day was July 18, when it hit 113 degrees officially at McCarran International Airport, where they record all the data. We had six days of 110-degrees or more.
August cooled off a little bit.
We had four days when it didn't go above 100 degrees. The hottest day was Aug. 21, when it hit 110 degrees at McCarran.
So far in September, we've had seven days where it hit 100 or above. The last one was on Saturday, Sept. 12, when it hit 103.
UPDATE: The weather service had predicted earlier this week we were going to get record high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday of around 104. But now they say the temperatures won't be quite that hot, with highs hitting around 100.
