100-degree heat heading to Las Vegas this weekend

But today’s temperatures just a notch above normal

Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 | 7:11 a.m.

A hot blast of late-summer heat will move in to the Las Vegas Valley this weekend. But if you've got outdoor activities planned today, like a festival or a football game, the weather should cooperate.

Sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid 90s are expected today for the valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said a slow-moving, low-pressure system will move to eastern Arizona today, keeping thunderstorms just east of the region.

Temperatures were starting out this morning in the low 70s and were expected to climb to a high of near 95 degrees this afternoon, forecasters said. The normal high temperature for today's date is 93 degrees and the record is 108 degrees, set in 1937.

Hotter weather is heading in to the valley by the end of the week.

High pressure will persist near central California, creating a dry northeast flow of air over the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert, the weather service said.

That's going to bring warmer temperatures in for the last weekend of the summer, with the highs reaching near or above 100 degrees Saturday through Monday, forecasters said.
