The National Weather Service says the Las Vegas Valley will have high temperatures in the mid 90s today before 100-degree highs return for the last weekend of the summer.
This morning's temperatures were starting out in the mid 70s and were expected to climb to a high of near 94 degrees today, which is the normal temperature for this date. The record high for today's date is 107 degrees, set in 1937.
Tuesday's high was 92 degrees at 4:47 p.m. at McCarran International Airport. That was two degrees below normal for that date. The record for that date was 107, set in 2000.
The weather service said low pressure drifting south into Arizona will bring a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms to northern Mohave County through Thursday.
Tonight's temperature for the Las Vegas Valley will drop to around 74 degrees, then climb to a high of 97 on Thursday.
Then high pressure will start to build into the region at the end of the week, bringing a gradual warming trend that will put afternoon high temperatures about 8 degrees above normal by Saturday, forecasters said.
The weather service is predicting highs of 102 degrees both Saturday and Sunday for the valley.
Forecasters also said there's the potential for temperatures to reach record levels on Monday and Tuesday for the area. The record for Las Vegas for next Monday's date was 104 degrees, set in 1943.
The record for next Tuesday's date was also 104 degrees, set in 1949. Tuesday is the first day of the fall season, which begins at 2:18 p.m.
