Letter to the Editor:
Remember: We are all in this together
Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 | 2:01 a.m.
Ryan Tilly — in his letter to the editor in Saturday’s Las Vegas Sun, headlined “Government should not do parents’ job” — writes: “We as parents have failed our kids if we cannot teach them right from wrong, to obey us, respect their teachers and so on.”
I disagree. Parents have always needed all the help they can get to nurture and guide their naturally curious, rebellious offspring. Teachers and spiritual leaders voice their opinions and philosophies. Our president is also a teacher/communicator, leader and role model.
By asking students and the rest of us how we can help our country, President Barack Obama is leading us on a constructive path to reconciliation.
If we could focus on our country, on our world — not on our provincial selves — we would halt the destructive, adversarial, simplistic thinking of picking “the right one”: Democrat or Republican, Christian or “Other,” black or white, etc.
When all is said and done, aren’t we really all on the same team?

re: Teachers and spiritual leaders voice their opinions and philosophies
When you say "teachers," I assume you're talking about college professors. Any public school teacher who voices an opinion or philosophy is asking for a lot of grief and trouble. And teachers should watch what they say. We are not there to indoctrinate children. We need them to learn to research, look at various sides of issues, and think for themselves.
" Our president is also a teacher/communicator, leader and role model."
I do not want a cocaine user to be a role model to my children.
It's not MY country, I just live here. I am an individual and member of my family first and foremost. Everything else is secondary.
SgtRock,
So you were against Bush as he used cocaine as well? If you tell us he quit and that, therefore, it was OK then your argument against President Obama is stupid.
So which is it?
jlb101,
What is it like to be sociopathic and stupid?
Teacher,
You mention: "And teachers should watch what they say." Unfortunately, many teachers don't watch what they say in class, even to the point of wearing Obama for President Union buttons in class during the last election.
Where do you draw the line on political speeches?
The President, Congressmen, local representatives, and civic leaders. How about other political organizations like NAZIS, Black Panthers and maybe the KKK?
How about religious leaders? Is it all right for the Pope to give a speech to the students and then bless them? How about other heads of churches? How about local preachers from all denotations?
I bet they all would like to motivate the students...
In your post the other day, you sound as if you don't like teaching. Too much trouble trying to educate those "kids." I call them children...
You said the other day that you don't the right to discipline them? What do you want, "corporal punishment?"
95% Of all teachers are commented Democrats thats why we need more private schools. Less music, arts, and sports, And more real education and less left wing indoctrination.
Mschafer-Better a sociopath that a social parasite who cannot survive without sucking off of people who are better than he is. Stupid? I'm intelligent enough that I can earn enough money to pay my doctor bills. If you need Obama care you are the stupid one.
MsSchafer.
THAT is the post of the day.
ditto powerplay.
and we can't forget our buddy LARRY.
How many times will you post that drivel
about teacher? I thought teacher's post
that you keep on trying to disparage was
a very valuable lesson, Larry. Pay Attention!!!
teacher ranted in a post, but won't respond to questions asked.
Of course you thought teacher's post was a valuable lesson to YOU. But not to me...
That is because people like you DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT, Larry. The truth is often painful to people who listen.
Pam, when I was growing we didn't look to the Presidents as role models, teachers, communicators to us. It was our PARENTS first and foremost. Teachers were there to teach period. I grew up just fine without a role model other than my parents-ok I will admit the Lone Ranger and Tonto were a close 2nd
gmag39.. People like me? You don't have a clue about people like me. You are so busy putting people down for their beliefs that you wouldn't know the truth if it bit you on your donkey.
I don't want to be Bush to be a role model either.
When was the last time anyone has heard any politician voice his feelings in an unethical way right in the middle of a speech being given by the President of the United States? This tells me that either this politician has totally lost it, or, this Representative has had enough of the B.S. and in a time chosen by himself he had to somehow stop the lies.
I was quite shocked when I read 2 comentaries in todays Sun, one by E.J.Dionne, and the other by Mike Littwin. They both slammed Joe Wilson for his two words spoken during Obamas' speech. Nothing was mentioned of the events that took place in the days to follow after these two words were spouted out in the inappropiate manner that E.J. and Mike were so willing to write about.
However E.J. and Mike left out one important event that took place by Friday of last week because of Joe Wilsons' two words. Obama and the House put e-verify back into the bill which was voted out just recently.
Now Obama either read the whole bill and made the decision that e-verify wasn't important, or, he didn't read the whole bill and just orated his speech as it was given to him.
Same goes for the House. It's obvious to conclude that our elected officials did not feel that there was a problem with the bill.
I feel that the majority of our elected officials are more on the side of forming the North American Union than protecting The United States of America. Thank you Joe Wilson for having the only voice that recently was heard around the world. It seems you are the last politician who cares.
"Our president is also a teacher/communicator, leader and role model. President Barack Obama is leading us on a constructive path to reconciliation."
Now how can anyone possibly improve on that? The president has led an exemplary life. His decisions and actions throughout his life have been above reproach. His judgment has always been a standard we all should strive for - he is indeed a role model.
More Kool-Aid please.
President Obama is a great role model.
If Republicans don't like him, that's to bad.
It'll be a long 8 years for you guys.
If Obama is such a role model why didn't HE bring up the point that e-verify should be put back into the bill after it was removed. He stated in his speech that the bill does not give illegals the right to be covered under the health bill. Obama did not mention that e-verify was taken out of the bill and he won't sign the bill until it is put back. He could have simply put e-verify into a signing statement and added it to the bill, but no. It's not in his present agenda.
Joe Wilson was the only elected official to bring this point up, and now he is being criticized by his peers for doing so. We need more politicians like Joe, who are not afraid to speak out when they have something to say. Freedom of speech, even when the President has got the floor. If all our politicians were this dedicated, the disloyal ones in our government would be afraid of pulling these tricks to further destroy our country and harm our citizens.
