Sun Editorial:

A party in disarray

Republicans let the crackpots run the show and drag down the national debate

Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 | 2:07 a.m.

When Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., yelled, “You lie!” during President Barack Obama’s speech to Congress last week, he put a face on the Republican Party’s problem.

The crackpots run the show.

In a story Thursday, Politico reported on how the extremists and conspiracy theorists have taken over the GOP, noting some painful examples:

• Sarah Palin, the former vice presidential candidate, falsely claimed that the president’s health care plan would set up “death panels” to decide when senior citizens die.

• Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., accused Obama of trying to turn the nation into a “totalitarian state” and installing “Nazi” policies.

• Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, fanned the conspiracy flames regarding the ridiculous accusation that Obama was born in Kenya by telling a fellow birther, “I agree with you, but the courts don’t.”

“Neither party has an exclusive on wack jobs,” Republican media consultant Mark McKinnon told Politico. “Unfortunately, right now the Democrats generally get defined by President Obama, and Republicans, who have no clear leadership, get defined by crackpots.”

This would be laughable if people weren’t taking them seriously. For example, conservatives were whipped into a frenzy because the president planned to talk directly to schoolchildren in a nationally broadcast speech. Republicans fretted that he was trying to “indoctrinate” young students with his “socialist” agenda, and many parents pledged to keep their children out of school. The children missed an inspiring speech in which the president encouraged students to work hard in school, listen to their teachers and obey their parents.

The crackpots have not only become the ideological engine of the Republican Party, but they are also dragging down the debate in Washington on major issues.

How does Congress overhaul the nation’s health care system when Republicans are talking about “death panels” and other outright lies?

Republican leaders in Congress should repudiate these outrageous ideas and either honestly engage in the debate or get out of the way. Health care reform is too serious an issue to be derailed by a party of people wearing tinfoil hats.
