Wildfire danger west of Las Vegas area
Hot, dry and breezy conditions expected for most of southern Nevada today
Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 | 8:16 a.m.
Hang on to your hat today -- hot temperatures and gusty winds are heading into the Las Vegas Valley, according to the National Weather Service.
And if you're going into the mountains west of Las Vegas, watch out for any wildfires.
The weather service has issued a red flag fire danger warning from noon to 8 p.m. for Esmeralda and central and southern Nye counties.
Winds will gust to 35 mph and relative humidity will fall below 15 percent in those areas, resulting in critical fire weather conditions, the weather service said.
The weather service said a low pressure system approaching the California coast will bring the dry and locally breezy conditions to much of the area today.
However, some moisture is still lingering in the region to the north and east of Las Vegas, forecasters said. So a few thunderstorms might still develop over portions of Lincoln County in Nevada and Mohave County in Arizona, they said.
In the Las Vegas Valley, temperatures were starting out this morning in the low 80s and are expected to climb to a high of 99 degrees this afternoon, forecasters said.
That's four degrees above the normal high for today's date of 95 degrees. The record high for today's date is 109 degrees, set in 1948, the weather service said.
Winds will be from the south between 7 and 17 mph, gusting to 24 mph. Tonight, the winds will be from the south to southwest, from 17 to 20 mph, then decrease to 8 to 11 mph, forecasters said.
High temperatures will be closer to normal early in the week. The weather service says Monday's high will be 96 degrees and Tuesday's high will be 93. But triple-digit heat is expected to return on Thurday, forecasters said.
