LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Continual criticism of Palin is overkill

Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 | 2:04 a.m.

Sarah Palin-basher Gail Collins of The New York Times, in her Sept. 5 column in the Las Vegas Sun, was a little less nasty than usual. She admits that, for the first time in her life, she feels sympathy for Sarah Palin. Oh, goody. The Palins must feel relieved.

Why does Ms. Collins feel sympathetic? Because Levi Johnston, the ex-boyfriend of the Palins’ daughter Bristol, is interviewed in an unflattering article about the Palin family in Vanity Fair magazine. Young Johnston, the father of Bristol’s baby, described the Palins’ home life as anything but perfect.

But Levi himself, a high school dropout, comes across as a typical spoiled, whiny, self-centered, not-too-bright teenager — exactly the kind of boy-child most feared by parents of teenage girls.

Ms. Collins complains that during the Republican National Convention, Sarah Palin created the fantasy that the hand-holding Levi and Bristol were the ideal, loving couple. But Collins does give Sarah Palin credit for once trying to separate Bristol from Levi. Alas, too late. At least the Palins were up front and honest about their unwed, pregnant daughter.

Levi Johnston said his girlfriend’s mom didn’t know how to shoot a gun. Too bad Sarah Palin didn’t turn the gun on Levi, but the Palins should be glad there wasn’t a shotgun wedding. Imagine having Levi as a son-in-law.

What new bit of scandal about the Palins could Levi Johnston have revealed for Vanity Fair that the horde of newsmen who descended on Alaska before last year’s election didn’t dredge up?
