Hot weekend ahead for Las Vegas

Cooler weather to move in Tuesday, forecasters say

Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 | 6:06 a.m.

Get plenty of ice if you're going to tailgate at football games this weekend -- the Las Vegas Valley will have 100-plus degree heat again today and Saturday.

But much cooler weather is coming to the valley early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Also, the higher elevations in the area will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours today through Sunday, forecasters said.

High pressure over northern Nevada will lead to slightly warmer high temperatures today and Saturday over the valley, the weather service said.

Today's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies, with temperatures starting in the low 80s and climbing to a high of 104 this afternoon.

The normal high for today is 96 degrees and the record high is 109, set in 1945.

Temperatures will fall off to a low of 80 overnight, then climb again to a high of 104 degrees on Saturday.

The weather service said an area of low pressure will move into central California on Monday and into Nevada on Tuesday.

Tuesday's morning low is expected to be around 73 degrees and the high is expected to reach only 93 degrees, forecasters said.
