Triple-digit heat heading to Las Vegas
Slight chance of thunderstorms in higher elevations
Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 | 5:56 a.m.
Las Vegas will be hot and dry today, with temperatures pushing well above normal into the triple digits by late afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
But if you happen to be in the higher elevations west of the valley, you could see some stormy weather today. Forecasters are predicting a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon in the Spring Mountains.
However, most of the wet weather will be to the east of the Las Vegas valley, forecasters said. A weak disturbance over northwest Arizona, along with residual moisture, will bring scattered thunderstorms to Mojave County in Arizona, the weather service said.
There's also a slight chance of thunderstorms today for parts of the Mojave National Preserve in southeast California, forecasters said.
The forecast for the Las Vegas area calls for temperatures to be several degrees above normal, starting in the high 70s this morning and climbing to 102 degrees by mid afternoon.
The normal high temperature for today is 96 degrees and the record high was 108, set in 1945.
Wednesday's high reached 99 degrees at McCarran International Airport, which cooperated with those celebrating the date being 9-9-09.
The extended forecast calls for temperatures to be several degrees above normal for the next few days. The highs in the valley will be 104 degrees on Friday, 103 on Saturday, 102 on Sunday and 100 on Monday, the weather service said.
