Fatal crash

An 18-year-old man was killed and four other teens seriously injured Wednesday night when the car they were in went out of control and crashed into a block wall, Metro Police said. Those injured were a 17-year-old girl and three 14-year-old boys.

Police said it appeared alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash but did not release any additional details.

The driver has been identified as Lucio Sanchez Jr. of Las Vegas, a spokeswoman for the Clark County Coroner’s Office said. An exact cause and manner of death hasn’t yet been released.

Clark County School District records indicate Sanchez was a former student who attended the Academy of Individualized Study in the 2007-2008 school year, a school district spokesman said today.

The wreck occurred about 6:30 p.m. at West Tropical Parkway and Kylie Street, in the northern part of the city.

Evidence and witness statements indicate a 2002 Honda Civic was headed south on Serene Drive when Sanchez lost control while turning onto Tropical Parkway, police said. The car hit a block wall at the southeast corner of Kylie Street and rolled on its side, police said.

Sanchez and passengers were transported to University Medical Center, where Sanchez was pronounced dead. The passengers were admitted with serious injuries.

This is the 59th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year. This crash is being investigated by Metro’s Accident Investigation Section.

  2. Are you kidding me? What an ignorant hick. Those were children in the car and
someone lost their life! Learn how to be a human being.

  3. The 2 comments infuriate me, how heartless and idiotic...just because his name is Sanchez, r u kidding me?! I have known one of the boys since he was in 2nd grade and the other 2 boys for a couple of years. My kids are friends with them and it is awful, they made a mistake and trust me they are paying for it. By the way 3 of those kids are white and who are you guys to judge them?! And the driver's family are here legally and employed and homeowners...maybe your time would be better spent by wishing these kids well and show some sympathy towards the hell the kids and their families are going through!!!

  4. Sanchez...whatever.

  8. Folks, this is not a tragedy! A tragedy would have been if this bunch of juvenille delinquents had hit one of us or our friends or family and caused death or injury. The fact that it affected them alone is only justice. No one poured the booze down their throats, so it doesn't matter where it came from. Sorry, but someone who is 18 is adult and should behave like one.

  9. To me,This is a very touchy situation. I know a person is an adult at 18, It's just sad to see someone come to passing at such an early age.

  10. What Spock said. If I had a nickel for every dumb thing I did as a kid, although it was never anything involving alchohol or whatever-I was way too big a geek for that, LOL.

Anyway, it's just sad. 18 is so young...

  11. Narcissa, When I think of my life and how long the LORD has blessed me, Things come in perspective. I am not elderly, but every day that I drive in this town and able to make it home is my favorite. I have been licensed to drive since the age of 15 and drive as if one turn of the wheel could mean death in secounds. My heart breaks for these young people that forsake the hazards of machines that they choose to operate,Death is swift and unapologetic!

  12. Again I feel compelled to comment on a remark made. What makes you think these kids were juvenile delinquents? You don't even know who these kids are and your unfairly judging them. And how can you say this is not a tragedy? I think negative comments like yours are better left unsaid. This could of happened to anyone of us. I'm an overprotective mom, but I'm still smart enough to know that we can't protect our kids at all times. We teach them right from wrong and hope for the best. This most definitely was a tragedy and my heart goes out to all of them.
