Fatal crash

An 18-year-old man was killed and four other teens seriously injured Wednesday night when the car they were in went out of control and crashed into a block wall, Metro Police said. Those injured were a 17-year-old girl and three 14-year-old boys.

Police said it appeared alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash but did not release any additional details.

The driver has been identified as Lucio Sanchez Jr. of Las Vegas, a spokeswoman for the Clark County Coroner’s Office said. An exact cause and manner of death hasn’t yet been released.

Clark County School District records indicate Sanchez was a former student who attended the Academy of Individualized Study in the 2007-2008 school year, a school district spokesman said today.

The wreck occurred about 6:30 p.m. at West Tropical Parkway and Kylie Street, in the northern part of the city.

Evidence and witness statements indicate a 2002 Honda Civic was headed south on Serene Drive when Sanchez lost control while turning onto Tropical Parkway, police said. The car hit a block wall at the southeast corner of Kylie Street and rolled on its side, police said.

Sanchez and passengers were transported to University Medical Center, where Sanchez was pronounced dead. The passengers were admitted with serious injuries.

This is the 59th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year. This crash is being investigated by Metro’s Accident Investigation Section.
