The seniors on this year’s Boulder City High boys soccer team remember the losing.

Promoted to the varsity team during their freshmen and sophomore seasons, the players took their lumps facing older and more inexperienced competition.

Now, it is their turn for success.

With seven seniors as regular contributors, the Eagles feel this is their year to win the state championship.

“Talent-wise, we have the best team in the league,” Boulder City coach Ryan Teepen said. “We are playing a group of 13 guys who have a lot of experience.”

Despite the slew of veterans in the lineup, Boulder City has opened the season with a pair of ties in two games it could have easily won, Teepen said.

Boulder City trailed 2-0 in the first half on Sept. 3 against visiting Virgin Valley before rallying for a 2-2 tie. Senior Trevor Montgomery’s direct kick from 25 yards out found the back of the net for the equalizer with about five minutes to play.

“A lot of us don’t like to get dirty and wait until the last possible second to turn it on,” Montgomery said. “We can’t do that and expect to win.”

Boulder City lost to Faith Lutheran last year in the 3A Southern League finals and fell to Truckee (Calif.) High in the state semifinals. This year, with Faith Lutheran part of the 4A and Boulder City more seasoned, the Eagles are eyeing a championship.

Virgin Valley is also expected to contend and showed last week it can play with the Eagles.

“We played their game in the first half,” Teepen said. “But the second half gave us confidence. We know that no matter how many goals we trail by, that we are never out of it.”

Senior Zach Haley scored Boulder City’s first goal against Virgin Valley, knocking in a loose ball from about 12 yards out in the 60th minute.

Haley, Montgomery and others have played together since their days of youth soccer with BC United. The familiarity gives Boulder City an edge — but only if they play a full game.

“We need to start stronger in the first half instead of digging ourselves in a hole,” Haley said. “We can’t always be playing catch-up.”

Boulder City returns to action Sept. 15 against host Lake Mead Christian Academy.

Discussion: 2 comments so far…

  1. Virgin valley could have easily won the game they just let down at the end..

  2. I beg to differ about BC having the best talent in the league. Cover the Virgin Valley vs. Boulder City match next time around.
