Slightly warmer than normal today for Las Vegas

Forecast calls for slight chance of showers, thunderstorms later in week

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 | 6:26 a.m.

If you're heading back to work today after the long holiday weekend, you'll find nothing but clear skies and hot weather in Las Vegas.

The weather service says high pressure will build over the area, allowing for mainly dry conditions throughout the region.

However, there is a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms to pop up today over the eastern areas of Mohave County in Arizona, then spread into southern Nevada on Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.

Temperatures for the Las Vegas Valley were starting out in the mid 70s this morning and will climb to a high of 99 degrees this afternoon, the weather service said.

The normal high temperature for today is 96 degrees and the record is 110 degrees, set in 1979.

Wednesday could bring some wet weather to the valley. There's a 20 percent chance after 11 a.m. Wednesday for thunderstorms, forecasters sday.

Hotter temperatures return Thursday through Saturday, with temperatures running 6 to 9 degrees above normal, forecasters said.
