Highway traffic heavy as visitors leave for weekend

Monday, Sept. 7, 2009 | 10:41 a.m.

Traffic leaving Las Vegas is heavy today as travelers head home to Arizona and California after the holiday weekend.

The Regional Transportation Commission is advising motorists to expect delays due to heavy holiday traffic on U.S. 93 South, which goes across Hoover Dam to Arizona, and along Interstate 15 South to California.

The RTC is advising motorists traveling to Arizona to go through Laughlin as an alternate route today due to the heavy volume of cars.

The Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority was expecting an estimated 273,000 visitors during the holiday weekend, 2,000 less than the visitor count for 2008. Citywide hotel occupancy was expected to reach 87 percent, a 1.8 percent drop from Labor Day weekend 2008.
