Home’s second fire ruled arson, causes $200,000 in damage

Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 | 10:15 a.m.

House fire

Arsonists early this morning struck a vacant house for a second time in recent weeks at a subdivision near Washington Avenue and Rancho Drive, this time causing about $200,000 in damage, investigators said.

At 2:06 a.m., dispatchers received several reports of a house fire at 2513 Birds Nest Cactus Court. Firefighters had the fire extinguished about 10 minutes after arriving on the scene, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. No one was injured in the blaze.

The fire caused serious damage to the second floor, attic and roof of the home, which fire officials said also had been broken into and set on fire during the early morning hours of Aug. 14. The Aug. 14 fire caused little damage and was contained to the first floor living room, Szymanski said, and after that blaze, the home was secured.

A security guard told fire investigators that the home had been checked on within the hour of Saturday night's blaze and everything seemed fine. Both fires have been ruled arson.

Neighbors told authorities the home had been vacant for about two years. The fire remains under investigation.
