Woman dead, man critical in shooting, suicide attempt

Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 | 10:26 p.m.

Shooting

A woman was found dead Saturday in a North Las Vegas home and a man was critically injured in what police say appeared to be a shooting and attempted suicide. A 16-year-old girl who was in the house was not injured, police said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home in the 4900 block of Rancho Domingo Court regarding a domestic disturbance.

They heard gunshots from inside the home and, thinking they were under fire, took cover, police said. They quickly realized, however, that the shooting was contained inside the house and forced their way in, officials said.

They found a 38-year-old North Las Vegas woman who had apparently died of multiple gunshot wounds, police said. A 46-year-old man from Cibolo, Texas, was in critical condition with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The teenager was barricaded inside another room.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the shooter and the female victim had a previous relationship and a child in common — not the teen in the home at the time.

It appears the man confronted the woman at the front of the house as she arrived home and the woman was almost immediately assaulted, police said. There are indications shots were fired prior to officers arriving, but exactly when the woman was fatally shot is under investigation, authorities said. Officers used force making entry into the home and some witnesses mistook the noise as gunfire by the officers, police said. None of the officers, however, used lethal force, police said.

There was only one minor injury to an officer; a cut from a broken window suffered as the officer entered the home.
