Letter to the editor:
In Afghanistan, resolve needed now
Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 | 2:03 a.m.
Let’s remember that the reasons we are fighting in Afghanistan are to rid the scourge of Taliban rule and the existence of al-Qaida, which operated training camps for terrorists and hatched evil plots to devastate America with attacks including those on 9/11.
What is needed now is perseverance and commitment by America to realize these objectives.
With the upcoming anniversary of 9/11, our efforts to win in Afghanistan must be renewed, and our resolve made ever more clear.

I disagree, we are there because of the opium fields.
I disagree, but I'm still waiting to hear a good reason why our military is there or in Iraq at all. The Taliban is not our problem, and al-Qaeda -- if it even exists except in our headlines and government press releases -- has somehow eluded all the precious resources America has thrown at it.
Let the flaming begin.
Back in 1992 Condoleezza Rice got a spot on the board of directors for Chevron Oil. She traveled to Kazakhstan representing the Chevron Corporation who was pursuing a $10 billion oil and natural gas deal. Pipelines were being proposed for construction and were to be installed in and thru Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to the Arabian sea where the oil and natural gas would be loaded onto tankers and shipped.
At that time the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan and could not agree on a price to allow pipelines to be installed thru Afghanistan. Chevron needed the Talibans support not only for the construction of the pipelines but for their help in controling the religious groups of Afghanis who were sure to be against the construction of said pipelines by Americans. Since it was obvious that the Taliban were not going to help Chevron control their people and give the okay for the pipeline construction they were soon to be labeled as terrorist by our government.
The plan to attack Afghanistan was made before Bush and Cheney got into office. With the help of the hanging chad, Bush beat Gore for the presidency.
The events of 9-11 gave them a reason to invade Afghanistan. The rest is history.
Oh, KillerB, the reason we invaded Iraq was to put taxpayer money into the pockets of the Industrial Military Complexes pockets.
I am so glad everyone knows the reasons we are there, But what do we do now.
I see two options:
1. Pull out...
2. Get the job defined and "Get Er Done"
fremmasmind -- wow. Thanx. Sort of says who's really in charge, no?
The reason we are in Afghanistan is because the CIA & FBI failed to do their jobs prior to 9-11. Read the 911 Commission results.
In Iraq, prior to our Bush fiasco, we had a "policy of containment" that worked very well, according to the mid-east theater commander at the time, Marine General Jim Jones. We patrolled by air and satellite, and hit them whenever troops massed, or a scud was wheeled out in the open. Now we have sophisticated Predators that can do the job. The troops in Afghanistan are a waste of time, resources, and money.
So OpenRange, what do we do now???
OpenRange -- your reasons don't sound credible, except for the intellegence agencies not doing their jobs (although that in itself doesn't give a reason for our military presence in Afghanistan -- unless it's to pick up innocent civilians then murder them while in custody).
I did not find the 911 Commission report to be at all credible, particularly since the key players were allowed to "testify" behind closed doors and off the record. Like the official report on Waco it was a whitewash, producing just the kind of report the feds wanted it to publish.
AngryReader -- fremmasmind made some sense of it, you didn't.
IF any of what you posted is true, still doesn't explain why we have troops on the ground there. The U.S. is NOT the world police!
Our nation's founders mistrusted standing armies. This is the proof why -- like all government departments, they're always looking for ways to stay relevant and get bigger.
AngryReader has hit this one out of the ball park.
Like it or not, we can't not allow a nuclear arsenal fall into the hands of anyone who has evil intentions.
Unfortunately, the U.S. has been the world's police since WWII.
angry reader, follow the money. We were told we went into Afghanistan to payback bin Laden for 9/11. However it turned out al qaida is a pseudo terrorist group.
We are in Afghanistan for two reasons.
1. To control the country and to set up construction of two pipelines for crude oil and natural gas, which has been in the planning since the mid 90's.
2. Provide a resource of tax dollars for the military industrial complex, for they are why we go to war. Follow the money!
Believe me we won't be handing any country that has oil reserves to any other country.
Pakistan has a large enough military with a good amount of weaponry to protect and defend itself against any other country in the region.
"Pakistan has a large enough military with a good amount of weaponry to protect and defend itself against any other country in the region."
Are you sure of that, my friend???
