In light of the recent wildfires in Southern California, people should consider how prepared they are for natural disasters. Does your family have an emergency plan? Do you have the resources to sustain "shelter in place" for at least 72 hours? Are you prepared to evacuate; do you have copies of important documents securely stored?
If you have not contemplated these questions, you may want to consider participating in the Las Vegas Fire Rescue "Community Emergency Response Team" training. The training is conducted over the course of six nights and is free. Classes will be held Tuesdays beginning Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. You can visit the CERT Web site at www.nvcert.org for more information or call Page Spencer at 229-0076.

Officer Ham responds to the 500 block of 6th Street for a report of a "residentially challenged" man squatting at an unoccupied residence. Ham learns that the man is traveling from Las Vegas to Milwaukee and "was told by someone" that he could stay at the residence. The suspect admitted that he entered the residence and consumed soda and water; and he also admits to stealing two packs of batteries that Ham discovers on his person from a convenience store. Ham arrests the subject for burglary and petit larceny and transports him to the Clark County Detention Center.

Officer Case responds to the 800 block of Del Rey Drive for a report of a domestic disturbance. Case arrives to find two brothers who had been fighting with each other. The two had been drinking for several hours at one of Boulder City's alcohol-distribution establishments, and then decided to drive home. Once home, the two began to argue about one brother's girlfriend. The argument escalated, and as a result Officer Case arrests them both. He also charged them with domestic battery; and one of the brothers is an ex-felon who has not registered in three years, so he charged him with that as well. Nice little case you put together there, Officer Case.

Officer Ham observes a local "frequent flier" near McDonald's on Nevada Highway. Ham knows the man has several active bench warrants, so he placed him under arrest and transported him to the Henderson City Jail.

Officer Case responds to the 7-11 on Nevada Way for a report of a woman attempting to purchase goods with a counterfeit $100 bill. Case locates the woman and speaks with her regarding the bill. After a short conversation, she allows Case to search her purse stating, "I have nothing to hide." Well apparently she did, because Case locates several prescription pills including xanax, soma and methadone inside a small tin box in her purse. Case arrests her for attempting to obtain goods or services under false pretenses and possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription. The woman is booked into the Clark County Detention Center on $12,000 bail.

Officer Salazar responds to the 300 block of Yuma Circle for a report of a domestic disturbance. Salazar determines who the primary physical aggressor is and arrests her for domestic battery.

At 5:58 a.m., officers from the traffic safety bureau and the patrol division responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle injury collision at Gingerwood Street and Nevada Highway. Officers secured the scene and blocked traffic, diverting cars down Gingerwood and around the accident scene. All vehicle occupants were seriously injured and transported to area hospitals for treatment. The accident caused major delays for motorists traveling southbound on US 93 and is covered on several local television news stations. Traffic investigators determine that the driver of the at-fault vehicle was under the influence of controlled substances at the time of the accident, which rendered him unable to operate a vehicle safely and caused him to rear-end another vehicle at a high rate of speed. In turn, the second vehicle's driver lost control and collided with a motorcycle also traveling south on US 93. Everyone survived their injuries and the at-fault driver was later arrested for DUI (controlled substance), with accident causing substantial bodily harm. US 93 southbound was closed to all traffic for three hours.
