Letter to the editor:

Remember those who fought, died in WWII

World War II began 70 years ago today — Sept. 1, 1939 — with the ruthless Nazi invasion of Poland. Poland was the first to fight Nazi aggression. Not long after, on Sept. 17, Russia stabbed Poland in the back by invading from the east.

During the conflagration, 6 million Polish citizens perished — half were Jewish. Adolf Hitler launched his “Final Solution” to eradicate Jews both in Poland and throughout Europe; death camps were established in Poland for that purpose. It is estimated that a total of 6 million Jews were killed by Nazi oppression during the Holocaust, which should never, never be forgotten.

The 70th anniversary of this day deserves solemn homage to the innocent people who suffered indescribably, who were maimed or who were killed by the Nazis and others during World War II.

As the war spread throughout the world, those who perished or fought in victoriously defeating those fanatics from spreading their poisonous attempts at enslaving and annihilating others should also be honored. This includes our own troops who played the decisive roles in the eastern and western campaigns. Many survivors, still alive today, deserve our gratitude.

Unfortunately, from time to time, various oppressors and fanatics who arise must be suppressed each time before they can ruin nations and people, as is being done even today in several parts of the world. Again, our troops are in the fray, as is our custom of assuring the rights of those being subjugated.
