In life and in politics

Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 | 2 a.m.

In life and in politics, it’s wise to abide by the old dictum:If you get in a hole, stop digging. Nevada’s Republicans, primed to take out the U.S. Senate majority leader next year by portraying him as an out of touch liberal, instead have fallen into a trap and handed Harry Reid an issue. First, Senate hopeful Sue Lowden and then Gov. Jim Gibbons have given Reid a chance to assert his tough-on-the-mob bona fides by questioning the authenticity of a well-documented attempt on his life after his tenure as the state’s chief gaming regulator. So Reid’s folks have unloaded newspaper stories stemming from the 1981 incident and a police report outlining the crude bomb placed in Reid’s car. Who’s next in line on the GOP side to make light of this?
