The Point of Attack

Considered one of the top players in the Class of 2010, Findlay Prep Point Guard Cory Joseph has alot of options when it comes to colleges including UNLV. He talks about the colleges after him and where UNLV fits into the equation.

Three down, two to go for Findlay College Prep ace guard Cory Joseph.

The senior who guided the Pilots to the ESPN national championship last season visited Villanova over the weekend and got to know coach Jay Wright, his staff and the Wildcats a little better.

“It went well,” said Findlay coach Mike Peck. “It gave him a feel for the area and school. He got with the team a little bit.

“But Cory doesn’t say a whole lot. He’s not super-excited by anything. Really, that’s one of the qualities that’s so endearing about him, his poise and composure. He’s never too high or too low. He’s even-keeled.”

Joseph, the seventh-ranked national prospect according to the recruiting service Rivals.com, has visited Texas with Findlay teammate Tristan Thompson, who has given an oral commitment to Longhorns coach Rick Barnes.

In addition, Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s guard Myck Kabongo, a lifelong friend of Joseph and Thompson from the Toronto area, has committed to Barnes.

And Avery Bradley, a star of last season’s title team at Findlay, is at Texas and might start for the Longhorns this season.

Joseph visited UConn two weeks ago, so Villanova was his third trip.

He leaves for Minnesota, where his brother Devoe is a sophomore guard this season, on Friday morning.

The following weekend, Peck said, Joseph will go home to Canada and talk with his mother. When he returns to Las Vegas, Joseph might decide whether he’ll take his fifth and final official visit to either Florida, Mississippi State or UNLV.

“He might have an idea,” Peck said, “and he’ll talk to us about it.”

  1. It would be great to have him, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Maybe if the Rebels have a great season it would persuade him to stay in Vegas?

  2. That might help red ... Cory is in no hurry, so that's a plus. Another one, which has been largely overlooked, is that two former teammates, Brice Massamba and Carlos Lopez, are Rebels. Cory could be considered a strong lean toward Texas, because that's where buddies Tristan Thompson and Myck Kabongo are going, and Minnesota's where his brother is, but UNLV is at least in his final six. Will be interesting to see where he makes his final trip. Mississippi State is an oddball, for sure. For what it's worth, Kruger was at the Findlay exhibition on Wed night. (See the separate Miech Again blog on the game.)

  3. The one thing that I believe will hurt UNLV the most is the glut of guards on the roster. Next year provided that no one transfers or leaves the program we will still have Jasper, Willis, Bellfield, Wallace, Hawkins, and Marshall. That is three deep at each guard position. I am sure that Joseph is confident he can beat out almost anyone but why would he not want to go somewhere where he can step right in and either start or log 30-35 minutes a game? That will most likely not happen at UNLV next year.

  4. CJ will never silp into the scarlet and gray. UNLV has no shot whatsoever at CJ, he is going to end up in a longhorn jersey playing alongside best friend Avery Bradley, you heard it here first. Kruger is only at those practices to get photo ops, he knows he doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell at CJ.

  5. Photo ops? you don't know what you're talking about, goofball

  6. betonblack, I'd hardly say UNLV has absolutely no shot. There are plenty of guards on the Rebels, for sure, but Cory's pretty special. Hey, they made the final six. box ... photo ops???

  7. photo ops?? thats what kruger wants..a picture with the one and only Cory Joseph. Please. If he doesnt wanna go to unlv then he is missin out, cus this town is hungry for a good team, just like the best guy to ever put on the scarlet and gray, Larry Johnson..when you start winnin games you're remembered 20 years later. looks like we got a team with the POTENTIAL to play with anyone, with or without Joseph.
