Another cool day ahead for Las Vegas
Temperatures to warm up to normal by weekend
Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 | 6:26 a.m.
Las Vegas gets another taste of winter today, with gusty winds and temperatures reaching only the mid 60s. But a warm-up is coming this weekend, just in time for Halloween.
The National Weather Service says the winds from the north will weaken today as the low pressure that created them moves east. Then a ridge of high pressure will develop, helping temperature get back to normal.
At 5:56 a.m. the temperature was 48 degrees at McCarran International Airport. It will climb to 50 degrees by 9 a.m. and to 58 by noon, then top out around 64 degrees by 4 p.m., forecasters said.
The normal high for today is 74 degrees. The record high for today's date is 90 degrees, set in 1950 and 1937. The record low is 30 degrees, set in 1971. The normal low for today's date is 51 degrees.
Overnight, the temperature will fall to a low of 45 degrees by about 7 a.m. Friday, then warm up to a high of 70 by late Friday afternoon.
Saturday's morning low will be around 50 degrees. And Saturday's high will climb to 75 degrees, forecasters said.
Today's winds will be from the northwest between 10 and 15 mph, gusting to 23 mph, the weather service said.
The following are the peak gusts of winds recorded during the last two days in southern Nevada:
Pahrump, 59 mph; Red Rock Canyon, 56 mph; McCarran International Airport, 47 mph; North Las Vegas Airport, 43 mph; Mercury-Desert Rock Airport, 43 mph; Henderson Executive Airport, 42 mph; Dyer, 42 mph; Beatty, 41 mph; Caliente, 41 mph; Pioche, 40 mph.
