Wind chills in the 30s hit Las Vegas

Cooler temperatures expected to last through Friday

Pull out the jackets, coats and gloves. Strong, gusty winds and colder temperatures brought wind chills into the 30s this morning to the Las Vegas Valley.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory that will continue until 8 p.m. for southern Nevada, Mojave County in Arizona and Inyo and the desert areas of San Bernardino in California.

North wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected this morning through the afternoon, while higher gusts will be possible in north-south oriented valleys, the weather service said.

Drivers of vans, campers, trailers and other high-profile vehicles should be alert to the winds affecting their steering. The winds are also expected to kick up dust and sand that could affect visibility, the weather service said.

Overnight, winds were gusting as high as 33 mph at McCarran International Airport.

At 5:56 a.m, the temperature at McCarran had dropped to 45 degrees and winds were from the north-northwest at 17 mph, gusting to 24 mph, making the wind chill 37 degrees.

Forecasters said the temperature will climb to 51 degrees by 9 a.m., to 56 degrees by noon and reach a high of 60 by 5 p.m.

That's 15 degrees lower than the normal high of 75 degrees for this date. The record high was 91, set in 1937. The record low was 32 degrees, set in 1970. The normal morning low for today's date is 51 degrees.

Morning temperatures on Thursday and Friday will be the coldest of the season, as temperatures plunge into the upper 30s for the first time in October since 1996, forecasters said.

Thursday's high will be near 62 degrees, with north to northwest winds between 8 and 14 mph and gusts as high as 22 mph.

Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 68 degrees and light and variable winds.

The weekend will bring above normal temperatures back to the area, with Saturday's high reaching 76 and Sunday's high hitting 78 degrees, forecasters said.
