Panel rejects Southwest Gas rate hike request

Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 | 12:52 p.m.

CARSON CITY – Southwest Gas originally asked to raise rates in Southern Nevada by an average of 4 percent.

But the state Public Utilities Commission issued two rulings Wednesday that means residential customers will see a slight decrease in their monthly bills.

Southwest Gas petitioned to raise rates to bring in an additional $28.8 million to boost residential rates by $2.16 a month. The commission allowed the company to increase rates by $19.3 million.

But in a second decision, the commission said Southwest Gas is paying less for its fuel, so the rates should be lowered.

The outcome is that Southwest Gas will reduce its rates by 1.6 percent or 85 cents a month for homeowners.

  1. Who the hell is the PUC? So let's get this straight, you at the PUC allow NVEnergy to keep jerking us off with more hikes, to what, pay for the new decals, closure of offices and other alleged cost saving measures while we get soaked during the summer, and appease the people with a modest decline in gas? What a bunch of a-wholes. Who's pocket are you in, as if we didn't know.
    Worthless story.
