A 75-year-old man suffered critical injuries Tuesday night when he was struck by a car on East Charleston Boulevard.
Metro Police responded at 7:40 p.m. to the collision on Charleston west of Spencer Street. Police said the pedestrian was crossing Charleston from north to south in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by an eastbound 1999 Lincoln Town Car in the right lane.
The pedestrian was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries, authorities said. His name wasn't being released late Tuesday.
The driver of the Town Car, identified as George Glenn, 60, of Las Vegas, wasn't injured, police said.

I know money is tight, but we have GOT to get more crosswalk signals in this town. I live not far away from where this happened. Most of the crosswalks on East Charleston -but everywhere in this valley, really- don't have signals. Trying to cross these streets at 7:40 at night is dangerous as hell. But walking to an intersection with a signal is often a quarter a mile away -no exaggeration.
And knee-jerk Glen Beck cultists, having crosswalk signals is neither a liberal nor a conservative issue. It's common sense.
If knee jerk liberals would spend less money on welfare, we could easily afford to improve our infrastructure.
If knee jerk liberals would spend less money on welfare, we could easily afford to improve our infrastructure.
------------------
Exactly what percentage of the overall budget is spent on welfare? How does that compare to the salaries of elected officials? And why weren't all these welfare rules reformed when Republicans had total control of the country? Hmm?
I live in this part of town, too. It's tense driving because of the number of people running across the road all over this area. I always feel like it's only a matter of time before I hit somebody. I've even had wheelchairs zip out in front of me a few times. Someone who gave me a ride one day, who doesn't usually drive around here, got exasperated driving down Charleston and asked, "Why are there so many people in the road???" I know people who won't let their kids drive around here because of the pedestrian problem. There are not enough crosswalks on Charleston. Once that's dealt with, if people still cross in front of cars, they need to be ticketed. If the mayor wants a better downtown, this is one of the problems to deal with.
Yes, Teaser, the welfare rules WERE reformed under a Republican congress during the Clinton administration, which to it's credit was pragmatic and not obsessed with Marxist ideology. Hence, Clinton's dramatic vow to "end welfare as we know it". Which is exactly what happened.
Under Chairman Maobama, that has ALL changed. In his ideological zeal to turn us into a collective society in which the wealth is redristributed, as he PROMISED it would be, the golfing Marxist has reversed many of Clinton's fiscally responsible welfare reforms.
I've heard the speeches in which Dear Leader whines about how people should be able to be on welfare longer and have more of it, all in the "interest" of blaming successful people for everyone else's problems.
Of course,in typical collectivist hypocrisy, that doesn't preclude him from dining on
$100 a pound Kobe beef during the numerous cocktail parties and concerts he holds EVERY week at that poor White House he and that perpetually angry wife of his are currently defiling.
Or having pizza FLOWN IN on a taxpayer-funded jet because (and I am not making this up) he "likes the crust". (I can only imagine the screaming and wailing about carbon footprints from the left if PRESIDENT Bush had done that.)
What a load of crap, Narcissa. The President hasn't changed society. And who the hell cares if he splurged once on pizza from Chicago. Anybody can do that for about $50. Big deal. You and Bush have cost us a trillion dollars and counting, on your phony, criminal war in Iraq. Thousands and thousands of America's young have been senselessly killed. Untold numbers of Iraqis into the six figures have senselessly been killed.
Bush and your ilk trashed the economy and have caused tremendous hardship on families across this nation. The horrendous mess we're in now happened on Bush's watch. He could have cared less. He never lifted a finger till the end. The current President is the only thing we have going for us, right now. Since you're living in a dishonest bubble, I'll pop your bubble and break the news to you: President Obama has gotten the economy growing again. Too bad job growth is always the last part to come around in a recovery. But better late than never, which is what we had for eight years with Bush, traitor to the constitution and the well-being of the American people. And your Wall Street friends are already back to their eight-figure bonuses and derivative trading schemes that created all the toxic assets in the first place. President Obama has a plan to jump start development of 21 century technologies which private industry can't do by itself. This is in contrast to people like you and Bush -who let the Chinese hollow out our nation's industrial base. Thank you for Bush, Narcissa. And thank you for all your bad ideas which come with your mindless, right-wing cult ideology. That includes your foolish garbage about pizza crust.
gunowners4obama,
You're absolutely right about the people in this part of town brazenly ignoring the law and common sense, by jaywalking wherever the damn well please. The 75 year-old man in this story was in the crosswalk. But yes indeed, I can think of no street in Vegas where there are more people suddenly darting out into the middle of traffic, than East Charleston Boulevard.
