Soldier killed in Afghanistan attended high school in Las Vegas

A 30-year-old soldier killed Friday in Afghanistan attended high school in Las Vegas and had recently married his high school sweetheart, the Defense Department said Monday.

Pfc. Kimble A. Han, of Lehi, Utah, attended Cheyenne High School and enlisted in the Army on Jan. 17, 2008.

He was deployed to Iraq in February 2009 until May, when his unit moved to Afghanistan. Kimble was home briefly on leave in August and was scheduled to return home in January or February.

He had married his high school sweetheart, Melissa, in February before leaving for Iraq.

A member of the Army's 569th Mobility Augmentation Company, 4th Engineer Battalion out of Fort Carson, Colo., Han's awards and decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.

Han died in Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.
