Brown cloud over Las Vegas Valley mostly a mystery

A brown haze hung over much of the Las Vegas Valley today and officials can't explain exactly what's causing it.

The Clark County Air Quality and Environmental Management officials posted a "moderate" level of dust in the downtown area.

Where those dust particles came from, however, remains a mystery.

National Weather Service meteorologists said that when cooler air sinks into the Las Vegas Valley before sunrise, that cold, still pool of air prevents clearing. But by 11:30 a.m., the effects of the inversion are gone.

It's too early in the autumn, and the weather has been too warm for wintertime inversions in the valley, they said.

By Sunday, winds between 15 and 20 mph are expected during the day with gusts to 30 mph, the weather service said. If that brown cloud is still clinging to the downtown area, it will be blown away.
