House fire

A garage fire caused about $60,000 in damage to a home this morning in the northwest Las Vegas Valley.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded at 3:39 a.m. to the report of a fire at 3007 Briar Knoll Court, near Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard. Firefighters said the occupant of the home was asleep when he awoke to a smoke alarm and a light haze in the house.

He heard loud banging noises coming from the garage, which was full of smoke. The garage was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from entering the main portion of the house, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Firefighters said the garage had multiple Freon gas cylinders and torches as part of the occupant's business of repairing home air conditioner units.

The garage was gutted while the rest of the home sustained minor smoke damage.
