DUI checkpoint planned Wednesday night near Strip

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 | 10:02 a.m.

Law enforcement officials will be on the lookout for drunken drivers during beefed up enforcement Wednesday night east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Metro Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday to target impaired drivers in the area of Flamingo and Paradise roads. The checkpoint will continue through about 3 a.m. Thursday.

Metro officers will be joined by authorities from the Nevada Highway Patrol, Nye County Sheriff's Office and the Boulder City Police Department.

"The checkpoint will focus on identifying drug and alcohol impaired drivers prior to their involvement in a collision, thereby increasing the safety of all Southern Nevada motorists," Metro said in a statement announcing the checkpoint.

The effort is partially funded by a grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety.

  1. Waste of time, they should use time for teaching METRO OFFICERS HOW TO DRIVE and seeing that they have proper attitude.

There should also be an investigation into the involvement of Metro Officers in the Militia stlye "Oath takers" movement that is being advanced by local hate-talk right wing radio.

  2. Doesn't it defeat the purpose when you give the public a head's up about when and where you will be setting up a DUI checkpoint?!

  3. Damn, guess I will have to bar hop on the west side of town that night. Thanks for the heads up guys.

  4. Its policy , and still they will catch people

  5. wtk: I wish I had a better answer for you, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with 4th Amendment and protecting someone against unfair surprise of being stopped by the police. So if you get busted you can't claim an unfair search and seizure because the police made the public aware of the checkpoint, i.e, the newspaper or a news broadcast. It might also have to do with the state getting federal money, but I was never able to find anything on that.

Your point does make a ton of sense.

  6. it's actually a seat belt and warrant stop too...how they ever ruled this constitutional is beyond me

  7. How about places that serve people drinks until intoxicated, pay for a taxi? no tickets, no dui, no accidents, no deaths.

Never mind, there's no money in that! Drunk driving is a HUGE INDUSTRY & 1000's of jobs depend on its carnage.

  8. Like you REALLY HAVE Constitutional Rights!

  9. Now how about doing an Illegal check point at Lake Mead and Nellis say 7am-9am on Friday! Then on Saturday do one at Pecos and Las Vegas Blvd. Load up all the Illegals and deport them! Better bring some buses because you will find thousands!

  10. LasVegas2009 : Watch it there, the staff will remove your comment here for speaking the truth...

  11. metro revealing when and where they will be setting up a DUI checkpoint. brilliant.

  12. Amen LasVegas2009

  13. That would be sweet if they actually announced the setup at that location, and then set it up on adjacent streets instead. Makes more sense. Obviously, those aware of the checkpoint are going to be utilizing streets not affected duh.

  14. people who worry about illegals are just slightly bored and think way too high of themselves...just make sure you vote for the people who have your views,,,oh thats right,,,there all scumbag liyin crooks...now thats almost the truth but you might get the picture

  15. WOW!
BOY, THIS CITY AND STATE IS REALLY STARTING TO
    SUCK...................

  16. Like drunks read this dumbass!

  17. "Doesn't it defeat the purpose when you give the public a head's up about when and where you will be setting up a DUI checkpoint"?!
    ****************************************************
I was wondering the same thing!!!

  18. They need to start having some illegal alien checkpoints.

  19. They need to setup check points on Blue Diamond between Jones and Rainbow, Durango between Warm Springs and Blue Diamond, and Rainbow between Russell and Blue Diamond. The rewards would benefit the taxpayers and many lives would be saved. The SW region of the Valley is riddled with intoxicated drivers but for some reason officials turn a blind eye to this area of the valley and it is tolerated.

  20. yodiracer,

    I'm reading this.

    CHEERS!

  21. Metro at another one of its finest moments.Flamingo is torn up,harmons torn up,trop is torn up,tell ya what boys, lets set up a check point right smack dab in the middle of it all!I went through it on my way home. When i had reached the entrance,I asked the officer why there was 4 patrol cars sitting on hwd hughs?I was pulled into the side lane and asked to get out of my truck! Was asked how much i had to drink?(i was just getting off work, and 2 i dont drink!)With no scent of alcohol present, was asked if i could pass a feild test?I asked the officer if he could do it sober too,and was treated and talked down to in a manner i wouldnt treat a dog! After i let the officer have his power trip, informed him that was a retired officer, and showed him proof.I was handed back my ID and went on my way.The point im trying to make here is this.Of the 4 years i have driven down flamingo to go to and from work, there has not been one check point! Now with all the road work in that area, they decide to put one up now?Im all for the check points for DRUNK AND IMPARED drivers, but to intrud on a persons car or truck because you beleive you have just cause is wrong! Then to line the only street to bypass the whole mess all together with patrol cars is a joke!Another fine job by metro.Keep earning that respect you all are demanding!
