Another warm day before cool down begins

Another warm day is expected today before temperatures settle toward normal 80s for this time of year.

The National Weather Service said that a high of 92 degrees could occur today, compared to a normal high of 81 degrees this time of year. Saturday’s high reached 90 degrees.

The record high for Oct. 18 -- 95 degrees -- was set in 1921, the weather service said.

Although 90-degree weather in October is unusual, since 1937 -- when official weather records began in Las Vegas -- 19 years, including this one, have seen temperatures 90 degrees or higher temperatures this month. That’s 26 percent of the years.

The last time Las Vegas reached 90 degrees occurred on Oct. 9.

The latest a 90-degree day occurred was on Oct. 29 in two years, 1937 and 1950, the weather service said.

The earliest date when the temp hit 90 degrees -- and then cooler weather arrived -- was Sept. 13, 1986.

After today, the weather service forecasts 87 degrees for Monday and then 80 degrees for Tuesday as winds sweep into the Las Vegas Valley. Most of the winds and a chance of showers will stay north of Las Vegas, but winds of 25 mph to 30 mph are expected late tonight through Monday in Summerlin and the Spring Mountain area, including Red Rock Canyon. Gusts there and at Lake Mead could reach 35 mph.
