Upsets abound as rivalry week approaches

Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and Steve Silver break down last week's high school football contests and preview this Friday's upcoming games including the Henderson Bowl between Green Valley and Basic as well as the Cleat game Chaparral and Eldorado.

Faith Lutheran finally has its first 4A classification victory.

Don Pearson accounted for three touchdowns and the host Crusaders never trailed in beating Shadow Ridge 27-13 Friday night.

Formerly in the 3A classification, Faith Lutheran debuted in the large-school classification this fall. Until Friday night, it had been a rough first-year.

The Crusaders (1-6) had come close to breaking into the win column in September — a 41-31 defeat to Centennial and 19-14 setback to Mojave.

Now, they have the important first win.

“I tell you what, it has been a lot of hard work,” Faith Lutheran coach Jake Kothe said. “This is really, really great for the kids. They needed this.”

Pearson returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown in first the quarter and the Crusaders never looked back. He also completed 10-of-23 passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Faith Lutheran closes the season against two of the valley’s top teams — Palo Verde next week and Cimarron-Memorial Oct. 29 to close the season.

“Obviously, Palo Verde is a very good football team,” Kothe said. “But we aren’t going to get caught up in who we are playing. We are just going to work hard in practice to get better and better. It’s exciting to get to play of the state’s best team.”
