Las Vegas Sun reporters Ray Brewer and Steve Silver break down last week's lopsided high school football contests and preview this Friday's upcoming games. They also discuss the latest news on the neck injury to Shadow Ridge's Zak Hill.
Durango High’s strong start of the season was nearly washed away in one game.
The Trailblazers, winners of four of their first fives games, trailed host Pahrump Valley by one point at halftime on Friday night before closing the game with 43 unanswered points in a 49-7 victory.
Julio Mora had five touchdowns and more than 200 yards rushing to help Durango avoid becoming the first team to lose to Pahrump in three years.
Durango (5-1) beat Spring Valley last week and have a big non-league game against Cimarron-Memorial next week.
“We all, including the coaches, were probably looking forward to next week and it caught up with us,” Durango coach Gary Maki said.

Man, I don't know what happened to that Pahrump team in the 4th quarter. They really looked like they had the momentum to start the 2nd half. I was kind of worried until about 5:00 left in the game. They let up a couple of big plays in the 3rd, but it was still a game until that unbelievable 101 yd pick-6. Pahrump had a good drive going until that play. I guess that one just the straw that broke the camel's back. We all knew that our Julio Mora was a great player, but Pahrump had a kid that I believe was only a junior, i think his name was DaJohn Selius or something like that. Kid is a real good athlete, runs hard, good feet. If he puts on some pounds in the weight room, he could be a real force as a senior if he gets some blocking in front of him. And I heard from one of the Pahrump fans that their starting QB didn't even play because of a disciplinary issue of some sort. I'm not sure what the deal is with that. But I'm not going to complain because we got out of there with a WIN!!! 5-1 BABY!!! A good hard fought game by both teams, and I know we've all heard of games where the score doesn't tell at all what kind of game it was. It sounds weird to say, but you could definitely say Durango "squeaked" out with a 49-7 win. P.S. I had never been to Pahrump before tonight, and I can honestly say that I was not expecting what I found there. That is an absolutely wonderful football environment. I was VERY impressed! Those people absolutely love their high school football. They must have had 2,200 people at that game all dressed up in school colors and they had their pep band playing loudly. Their grass looked beautiful, very nice facilities and the people there are very friendly. Some of the other Las Vegas schools should just go check it out. I think there is a lot we can learn from that community. They have 1000-1500 less students in their school that almost every school in our valley, but never have I seen support like that for a struggling team. That's what the boys at Sierra Vista, Clark, Mojave, Rancho and some of the other struggling teams need is SUPPORT!!! I wouldn't be surprised to see Pahrump Valley fighting for a playoff spot next year (I know it sounds crazy, but who would have thought that we would be at the positions we're in right now after last season?), just simply because of the support they have out there. Good job to both teams tonight! It was a very exciting matchup! We'll take the "W" any day! 5-1 baby!!! Bring on CMHS!!!
I don't think it's been 3 years since pahrump won. Maybe against a 4A team, that's true. I believe it's a 14 game losing streak. That's a lot of pressure they had on them leading 1 point at half. If they just get that first one, Im sure they can build and play with the 4A's
