Gibbons names new PUC chairman

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons has elevated Sam Thompson of Las Vegas to be chairman of the state Public Utilities Commission, which regulates electric, natural gas and telephone companies and other utilities.

Thompson has been a member of the three-member commission since July 2007. He succeeds JoAnn Kelly, who has resigned from the commission but agreed to stay on until the governor named a replacement.

Thompson has served as a commissioner on the Nevada Transportation Authority and on the Nevada Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices.

The third member of the commission is Rebecca Wagner.
