Letter to the editor:

Reid, Pelosi fill heads with sugar plum dreams

Friday, Nov. 27, 2009 | 2 a.m.

Like Santa and Mrs. Claus, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are preparing a sack full of gifts for the American people. And like the children who need only be good to receive every toy they dream of, Americans need only have good intentions to receive everything on their wish lists.

Harry and Nancy’s gifts include health care for everyone that will actually cost less, a clean environment that will actually create jobs, and peace in the world that will make America stronger.

Harry and Nancy Claus say they will pay for all of these goodies out of the profits of the evil health insurance companies, the salaries of greedy CEOs, the obscenely huge piles of wealth grabbed by businesses, and the selfish highest-income earners, who are mostly “Party of No” Republicans.

But just as children find out about Santa Claus’ true identity, Americans will find out what Harry and Nancy are really all about. Just as something cannot be created from nothing by elves, health care, a clean environment and world peace cannot be fabricated from the loot of boogeymen.

When the profits of health insurers prove inadequate, CEO salaries turn out to be a drop in the bucket, businesses lay off workers because of higher taxes and high-income earners stop working, Americans will be presented a bill for all their goodies — in the form of more and higher taxes and fewer and smaller freedoms.

Dreams of sugar plums are for children. Grown-ups pay bills.
