Facing stacks of lawsuits over unpaid bills and allegations it deceived advertisers by inflating circulation numbers, Las Vegas tourist magazine publisher Kellogg Media Group LLC voluntarily filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation Tuesday.

Kellogg, former publisher of "What's On, The Las Vegas Guide," in its bankruptcy filing listed no assets and liabilities of $5.383 million.

Investor and lender Brooks, Houghton & Co. of New York; which foreclosed on Kellogg assets Nov. 13, is now publishing ``What's On'' and is committed to keeping the publication alive, ``What's On'' spokeswoman Jodie Rocco said today.

She said "What's On," which also has an office in Atlantic City, is preparing to expand to the Gulf Coast and will have a greater Internet presence in the future.

"We're operating business as usual," Rocco said.

She declined to discuss the company's circulation number, saying it's currently being audited.

Creditors in Kellogg's bankruptcy filing include:

--Brooks, Houghton & Co.

--A former landlord suing the company

--Creel Printing & Publishing Co., which is also suing the company

--Two former executives suing the company, Andrea Collier and Tammy Scarpati, who charge in lawsuits it inflated circulation numbers

--Several freelance journalists

David Peeler of Greenwich, Conn., the company president named as a defendant in many of the lawsuits, is also listed as a creditor, claiming to be owed $369,500.

A meeting of creditors was set for Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Foley Federal Building in downtown Las Vegas, and attorney Lenard Schwartzer was appointed trustee to oversee the case and the liquidation of the company.

  1. But the Self-Proclaimed EXPERTS and their Made-in-China CRYSTAL BALLS said the recession is over and everyone is Thriving and Happy!

  2. karma.

i spent $2,000 dollars in advertising with these guys in their "what's on" magazine and didn't get a single call.

i went back and did the math and realized that there simply weren't enough hotel rooms they said they were in to equal the distribution they had in their rate card.

when i started asking questions, they threatened to file a lawsuit against me.

    class act, guys.

  3. Yes, that is why it is important to support locally owned media such as In Business Las Vegas.

They are directly accountable to to their local ties...

  4. also, this is just darwin. the old days of having to print information into a magazine and distributing a physical product is over.

  5. medium not the message

  6. "no assets and liabilities of $5.383 million"

If you have to go out - go out big! I wonder who let them get into this much hock!

  7. Um, rejco, the failure of What's On has NOTHING to do with the recession (yes, it is over). It has to do with the collapse of print media combined with poor management and a distinct lack of integrity on the part of the publisher. Recession or no, this company would have collapsed.

  8. smokin' Vegas - good on ya mate nobody goes to jail for theft and fraud in Amerika- land of the free and home of the weak

  9. Can't say that I am sorry that this is happening to such a company.

Jodie Rocco has a counterpart who writes for the American Quilting Newsletter published in Golden, Co. Her counterpart is Pam Rocco of Hollister, Ca. Pam has been quilting for 35 years and has been a writer for the magazine for some years also. She suddenly has a light go on that tells her she needs to tell about the use of heavy quilting, cotton/polyester batting v. fiberfil and hand tied quilts and why heavy quilting defeats the purpose of the fiberfil for batting. Then she rambles onto the next paragraph saying that "her paid for longarm quilter" prefers to use the cotton batting for Pam's quilts and then she rambles some more about how she has been quilting for 35 years. My brother has been quilting for 35 years on people in hospital o/r's.
