Destination: Death Valley National Park.
How far from Las Vegas: Shortest route, 120 miles; easiest route, 145 miles; ghost town route, 160 miles; most scenic route, 172 miles.
Why: Spectacular nature, hiking, rock climbing, camping, bicycling, museum, visitor centers, historic buildings, stargazing.
Why now: The second best time of year to visit, and it’s not nearly as crowded as in springtime. Warm but pleasant temperatures and generally clear skies. The camping season begins in fall and so do the ranger programs, which continue through spring.
