Clark High senior running back Andre Clay has verbally committed to Southern Utah University, Chargers coach Don Willis said.
Clay, who rushed for 850 yards and 14 touchdowns this fall, also received interest from North Dakota and South Dakota State.
“He’s a strong kid and a tough downhill runner,” Willis said. “He’s going to be a good one for them.”
The Chargers broke a 42-game losing streak in 2007 and haven’t been a key stop on the recruiting trail because of the stigma of a losing program, Willis said. But the coach hopes Clay’s success will help open the recruiting doors.
“So many people had overlooked our kids because of what our record was,” Willis said. “We had some kids who could have played college football, but didn’t get the looks because of what the team had done.”
Clark finished 5-5 this year, its best finish since 2001, and Clay was a leader in the turnaround, the coach said.
