Temperatures to plunge, gusty winds expected this afternoon
Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 | 6:52 a.m.
Grab a jacket before heading out this morning. And you might even need a coat and some gloves on Sunday.
A cold front will sweep across the region today, bringing gusty winds and colder temperatures through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
The front will pass over Las Vegas between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. today, forecasters said. Strong winds from the north to northwest of 19 to 22 mph, with gusts up to 32 mph, can be expected this afternoon, forecasters said.
A wind advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. today to 4 p.m. Sunday for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the lower Colorado River, the weather service said.
Wind speeds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts to 45 mph can be expected, forecasters said.
Wind speeds in excess of 30 mph will create dangerous boating conditions, such as choppy water and waves that could swamp and capsize a small boat, the weather service said. Operators of small crafts are urged to postpone their outings until the winds subside, forecasters said.
This morning, winds were calm and temperatures were starting out at 48 degrees at 5:56 a.m. at McCarran International Airport. The normal morning low for today's date is 44 degrees and the record low is 22 degrees, set in 1938.
Temperatures will warm up to 58 degrees by 9 a.m., to 67 degrees by noon and top out at 67 degrees by 2 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 66 degrees and the record is 81, set in 1995.
Temperatures will fall into the upper 50s by 6 p.m. and will continue to drop to a low of 44 degrees by 6 a.m. Sunday, with a wind chill of 37 degrees created by 15 mph north-northwest winds, forecasters said.
Sunday's high will climb to 58 degrees by noon and stay in that range through 3 p.m., according to the forecast. Then temperatures will plunge Sunday night and reach a low of 39 degrees by 6 a.m. Monday, forecasters said.
