LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Military must be strong and united or we all are at risk
Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 | 2:01 a.m.
Regarding the Las Vegas Sun’s Saturday editorial “Warning signs missed? Fort Hood shooter, a career Army officer, had shown disturbing behavior”:
From all indications, the signs were not missed. In fact, Nidal Hasan could not have been more obvious in his opposition to the American presence in the Middle East prior to this traitorous act. Former colleagues and documentation provide ample evidence of this man’s inner conflicts and building rage. Yet, he was permitted to continue in the service. Why?
This was a no-win situation for a military that has become increasingly political in its daily operations. Misguided sensitivity and a shift to project our military as an alpha peace corps now clearly supersede the need for our armed forces to appear strong, unified and unwavering in defense of our country.
Meanwhile, as a country, we must once again make a decision. Will we withdraw from the Middle East as we did in Vietnam, or will we pursue victory? This tragically, but realistically, includes horrific warfare and will result even in civilian deaths.
If we choose once again to withdraw, please discharge all of our poor soldiers and sailors and let them go home. They don’t deserve to be the pawns of wishy-washy Americans who have determined that we are the aggressors and deserve to lose.
Personally, I have suffered through the lengthy absences of a career Army father who risked his life in three wars only to be brutally slandered by those he kept liberated; the suicide death of a dear friend who never recovered from Vietnam; and the near death of a nephew who was betrayed in Afghanistan by an organization that was supposed to be our ally.
Yet, more anguishing than all of that is the constant, one-sided barrage of criticism against our country by Americans now in power. Their choice is clear. Either they face the truth of what is really happening, or we all face a series of 9/11s until they do.

let's be honest shall we...
the war in iraq was based on lies...
lies told by w the scum bag liar loser clown...
and largely influenced by jewish american public officials who wanted to use american blood and treasure to fight israel's battle...
officials such as...
paul wolfowitz - deputy secretary of defense - number 2 at the pentagon...
douglas feith - under secretary of defense - number 3 at the pentagon...
richard perle - chairman of the defense policy advisory board...
henry kissinger - former secretary of state curiously seen at the white around this time...
all jewish americans...
all argued for the war in iraq...
all wanted american blood and treasure to be used to fight israel's battle with israel's enemy...
this is the story that must be told...
answer me this...
who won the iraq war...
america...
please...
4,000 american soldiers dead...
over $2 trillion wasted when all is said and done...
iraq...
please...
over 100,000 innocent civilians killed...
israel...
bingo...
their arch enemy was defeated without expending any israeli blood or treasure...
boy what a deal...
bingo...
isreal won the iraq war...
and america paid for it!!!
Birdiedreamin......
Thank you...you make several good points. I don't agree with you 100% but what you say has great merit. I think we should throw in the factor of oil and the always driving influence of the military-industrial complex.
I often wonder how much longer did we stay in Vietnam than we needed to simply because of the influence and power of the military-industrial complex.........two years, maybe four years?
Of course, I also believe that the Bush administration invaded Iraq in order to establish military bases in that country that could be used as "staging areas" for a later invasion of Iran. Sounds crazy? Maybe, but I have come to the conclusion that nothing is too far fetched when it comes to our government...
Also, not to be over-looked is the fact that George junior wanted to bring Saddam down because Saddam had threatened to assassinate George senior....."Don't worry Poppy! I'll get him for you..." A silly statement? Not really if you consider that junior spent much of his life trying to "please and win the attention" of his father who always considered his son to be pretty much a failure...
Just heard that Obama has got 17,000 mental health officials to help cure all the troops of PSTD. This is Obama's style-simply throw money at a situation and that will fix it. All the money and doctors in the world will not ersae the memories of the children these guys had to kill. War is ugly. You can't just put a band aid on it.
Since he is going to continue the murder, Mr. Obama should have to go over to Afganistan for a year. That would teach him that this is no game.
I couldn't agree more with the letter writer. What we need is the steely resolve to fight more wars, not less! Never mind the blood and treasure spent, we need to stop being so wishy washy and realize that many, many more civilians must die so that we can achieve glorious victory on the battlefield! Remember folks, no matter how many trillions it takes, the important thing is for us not to appear as LOSERS. Our soldiers deserve nothing less than to be winners... in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan... heck, why not all the "stans" while we're at it. We can establish freindly, democratic, market economies throughout the entire middle east and beyond!
What could possibly go wrong?
hey el lobo...
i think you are spot on about w the scum bag liar loser clown...
remember hw was roundly criticized for pulling out of iraq too quickly in the first gulf war...
he wanted to be his father's redeemer...
and...
saddam not only threatened to kill hw...
he actually tried and failed once...
so he did want some revenge...
and the jewish americans were right there to pounce...
we must begin to question our relationship with israel...
it's a one way street...
and their friendship is just too damn expensive...
and make no mistake...
we were attacked on 9/11 because we essentially supply unconditional support to israel...
not because they hate our freedom...
please...
have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous...
bottom line...
isreal won the iraq war...
and america paid for it...
You guys need to go back to you video games or inventing conspiracies -- or whatever it is you who "can't or won't" do while others put their lives on the line.
It's a good thing that we did not act like this back in the 1940's or we would have lost World War II
You are so right, POWERPLAY. Why can't these defeatocrat libtards see that Iraq is just like WW II! The sooner we kill, maim, and imprison those who oppose our occupation, the sooner they will greet us as liberators. With a little more torture and a lot less feely-good dithering, democracy will spread like wildfire!

Americans have never backed off from a good fight when the fight was justified. The same is true today!
Prior to Pearl Harbor, many Americans were questioning our possible involvement in the war in Europe. The same was true in World War I. Slogans such as "I didn't raise my son to be a soldier," were common place. Many national groups marched in Washington proclaiming that the war against the Hun wasn't our fight..
In the early going, President Wilson agree with the marchers... He said "this nation is too proud to fight."
Prior to Pearl Harbor,(1939-41) national hero Charles A. Lindbergh, traveled the country speaking out against America's involvement in World War II. Henry Ford also was against the war as well as many other prominent Americans.
Whether or not to get involved in World War II was one of the main issues that drove voters to the polls in November of 1940.
Both presidential candidates, Democrat & Republican, promised voters that the United States would not get involved in the war...
One of the candidates simply said, time after time, "It's not our fight."
Then came Pearl Harbor and the whole situation changed. America's entry into the war became justified....
Most every American then got involved in one way or another and we fought the good fight....
Hey El-Lobo: I know: We also did not cry about it and we still won!

Wow! Nothing like spreading democracy to others at the point of a gun... Who ever said that we as a country believe in allowing others to choose their own form of government and determine for themselves how they wish to live?
Hmmmm....Maybe forcing our beliefs on others is nothing more than the old British Empire system of "taking up the white man's burden..." In other words, "shut-up, sit down, & do what I say. I know what is best for you..."
Looks like okra has a dislike for our military. Too bad he could not have waited a day to post his anti-military rant...
Oh, okra must have the day off because it's VETERANS DAY!!!
It will be a fantastic day when i will no longer have to read birdbrains post because his lib's are voted out of office! The smoke and mirrors that the libs have used for years is showing its hand and there ride to a perfect america in their eyes will be nothing more than passing thought!Im in now way saying that the repubicans can do better, but with how the american people were fooled wont happen again!Obooma hand picked his general! He told the fool what he needed, and yet this dumb a$$ sits and drags his feet.NOW THATS THE KINDA OF PRESIDENT I WANT.HE HOLDS THE POWER,BUT DOSENT HAVE ONE CLUE ON HOW TO USE IT!
So Wolfy...
Are you talking about the American Revolution?
The "Torys" who fought on the side of Great Britian were loaded up on ships and sent back to Britian at the end of the Revolutionary War...
Now days, it is the progressives who are spreading their idea of governing at the point of a political agenda...
Larry,
A lot of Tories also went to Canada, our friendly neighbor to the north that has such a wonderful universal health care system.
LarryVegas.......
Yes, many Tories went to Canada after the war & some went to England and other parts of the British Empire. Many stayed in the colonies, however. I find it interesting that many of the black Tories went to various places in the British Empire to live. They left in greater numbers than the white Tories...
Those Tories that went to Canada & England went voluntarly. I have never read where they were forced to go. Maybe you have a link that says otherwise...
Of course, many of the Tories weren't well received by their fellow colonists (Patriots) after the war and many had had their land taken from them during the war. Many survived the war and continued to live in the colonies...
Historians tell us that the American Revolution was fought by people who already enjoyed more freedom and choices that anyone on the face of the earth..... You probably find that hard to believe but its true...
The old saying that the "freest of the free were the first to rebel" pretty much describes the colonies who took up arms against the British Crown.
In conclusion, the great majority of Tories never left the United States, they stayed on and were recognized as citizens of the new country. Probably less than 10% of the Tories left the country.
Some became nationally prominent leaders and played important roles in the building of the United States..
The American Revolution had nothing to do with forcing democracy upon a group of people at the point of a gun......
Have I answered your question?
Oh, Larry Vegas. Why do you try (so lamely)to hurt me so? It's not the military I dislike. It's the liars and lunkheads like Rove, Cheney, Rummy, and Bush that I detest. After all, it was chicken hawk politicians like them who got us into Iraq, not the military. It was them, not the military who said it would be a cakewalk and that we would be greeted as liberators. They were also the ones who put insufficient numbers of troops in danger without proper body armor or up-armored vehicles. They are ones who consistently denied funding for veterans and a new GI bill.
These jerks in fact don't give a rat's A** about the troops, they just like to hide behind them to stifle opposition to their idiotic foreign policy schemes.
Am I unpatriotic for pointing this out Larry Vegas?

Are you saying that the Bush administration did not govern based upon a political agenda?
Wow! That's news to me... I have always thought that pretty much all presidential administrations through out history have at least attempted to govern based on their own political agenda....
That's what the electoral process is all about....political parties trying to win elections, and the control of the government, in order to put their political beliefs and agenda's in place....
There will be no victory in the middle east. Bush lost those wars years ago.
Bush didnt keep us safe from 9/11. The military cant even protect their own bases! Too busy getting free medical care and fighting socalism. LOL.
Great letter!!!!!!!
Unfortunately Patricia, the bogus invasion of Iraq created a whole new generation of 9/11 terrorist volunteers. Had we kept our sights on Afghanistan and the Taliban, the majority of our troops would probably be safe in the US, victorious and proud of their accomplishments.
The Bush haters are alive and sobering at the mouth trying to blame Obama's inadequacies on an admission who hasn't been in office for just about a year now.
The Bush haters are like a pack of vultures, circling the shadow of George Bush and getting worked up into a feeding frenzy.
Oh, okra, I remember guys like you spouting off about the military and this country when I was in Viet Nam. Those guys also were really trying to help us then by raising the moral of the troops.
So, okra and the rest of you military and Bush haters, I hope you had Veterans Day off and enjoyed your self in your own little worlds...
LarryVegas.....
Hmmmmm.....I just have to ask. Are you saying that all those who hate Bush also hate the military?
Isn't that the same type of twisted logic that claimed that one couldn't back our military and yet be opposed to the war in Iraq?
It seems I remember the Bush administration claiming that "you're either with us or you're against us" and there's nothing in between....
Wow! I just love right-wing brain dead logic! It's so predictable and and yet so simple in delivery.....
It must be the radiation in the water from the desert testing or early onset.
Wolfy...
Of course, not all Bush haters are anti-military, and I think that it is good to question the actions of our elected officials but today was not the day to question whether our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan are wrong.
Our fighting men and women deserve this one day where we praise their sacrifices not debate whether they are fighting a just war or not.
Today was the one day for the Bush haters to keep their mouth shut if they can't separate the military from politics...
LarryVegas.....
I also happen to believe that today is a special day when it comes to honoring our military.....That of course means all of our military people who have served this country in both peace time and war.
I have NO trouble separating my dislike for George W. Bush from the special feelings that I have for America's veterans.
I love my country very much and I greatly dislike the clueless man from Texas, and the mess that he got us in with our invasion of Iraq. The blood of the 4000 Americans who gave their life in Mr. Bush's War is on his hands.....
Veterans Day is a day in which we should take time and honor our soldiers, especially the fallen ones, but its also a day that we should remind ourselves that war is a very terrible thing and we should never go to war without justifiable reasons...

How short your memory is--your man George W. Bush started the war.
@Larry Vegas:
From the bottom of my heart, I am sincerely thankful for the sacrafices of the men and the women who have served in the military. My dad did Viet Nam and Korea, and both sides of my family fought in WW II. I have two great uncles who fought at Iwo Jima and more distant relatives who fought in the Civil War. I can trace at least one of my ancestors to the Revolutionary War. I am by birthright and experience the most patriotic and true America loving mo-fo you will ever come across.
I'm not trying to beat on you or the troops, and I suspect you know this. But when I read a letter in the paper that equates love of country with stupid, endless war ginned up by Halliburton sponsored politicians--well, it gets me kinda p.o'd.
It is my duty and right to speak out, and sorry, but every damn day of the year is a good day to call on the B&llsh*t
globarrvers:
Guess I'm not so good at sarcasm ):
We went to Afghanistan to get bin Laden, remember? We overthrew the Taliban while we were there. That should have been the end of the story and everybody goes home happy even though we couldn't get the person responsible for 9/11. Unfortunately not, and BTW, count me right up front as a Bush hater.
Have we killed enough Bush born terrorists to make Muslims love democracy and America? I don't think so. I do believe we have created enough anger toward America to last 1,000 years.
I'm a veteran, able to tell right from wrong.
Gordon is a firm believer that everything wrong in this world is George Bush's fault.
And everything that goes wrong for the next three years will also be George Bush's fault.
Gordon has learned the White House's talking points quite well...
