LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

There is plenty to be outraged about

I’ve been reading other people’s complaints in the newspapers and watching them on TV. Now it’s my turn.

First, we need to get rid of this bipartisan idea. It is not about the best interests of the people or the country. It is all partisan and all about reelection, and the sooner we quit acting surprised at partisan political bickering the better. Peace in the Middle East is more likely than bipartisanship.

Conservatives really upset me. They say they want smaller and less intrusive government but then they want the government to impose on others, by law, their beliefs about women’s reproductive choices and marriage. I guess they’re happy if no one imposes anything on them. They might campaign enthusiastically to prevent abortion but too many seem to lose interest once a baby is born.

Some television commentators put up a spirited defense of Wall Street firms handing out tens of billions of dollars in bonuses to their employees and decry workers being paid $14,500 a year, the minimum wage, because it will ruin the economy. Are they afraid stock traders won’t be able to afford a Big Mac?

I watch conservative members of Congress parade before microphones and wail about the budget deficits we are putting on our children’s credit card. Many of these same legislators had no qualms about eliminating the budget surplus we had in 2001 and passing the Bush tax cuts that benefited mostly the wealthy and put the budget back in deficit. Apparently it was OK if the kids paid for that.
