Near-record warm temperatures heading to Las Vegas
Temperatures running five to 10 degrees above normal through Wednesday
Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 | 6:02 a.m.
Las Vegas will get another relatively warm day today, with temperatures topping out in the upper 70s, according to the National Weather Service.
But the temperatures that have been five to 10 degrees above normal so far this month will take a plunge Thursday, the weather service said.
Light winds and an increase in high-level clouds can be expected today, forecasters said.
Temperatures were starting out at 52 degrees at 5:56 a.m. at McCarran International Airport. The normal low for this date is 46 degrees and the record low is 27 degrees, set in 1948.
Temperatures will climb to 66 degrees by 9 a.m., to 74 degrees by noon and top out at 79 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. That's just under the record of 81 degrees set for this date in 1990. The normal high for today's date is 68 degrees.
Overnight, temperatures will fall off to a low of around 53 degrees by early Wednesday morning. Those outdoors celebrating Veteran's Day on Wednesday will find the high reaching 79 degrees, forecasters said.
But the warm weather won't last long.
The ridge of high pressure that has brought warmth to the region since Halloween will give way to a cold front passing through the area late Thursday, the weather service said. Thursday's high will be 73.
And the front will send temperatures tumbling, with Friday's afternoon high reaching only 65 degrees. forecasters said.
Although no rain is expected in Las Vegas, there's a chance for rain in the mountains of southern Nevada, forecasters said.
