A 28-year-old man arrested in connection with stabbing his mother to death admitted the crime today in Clark County District Court.

Garrick K. Brown pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder in the death of his mother, 61-year-old Raymarie Brown.

It will be up to the judge at sentencing to determine if Garrick Brown is indeed mentally ill. Under the terms of the plea deal, he likely will be sentenced to life in prison, eligible for parole after 20 years.

Sentencing is set for 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 in front of District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt. Before sentencing, Leavitt will review documentation of Garrick Brown’s mental illness and will use that in determining his prison term, said his attorney, deputy public defender Tim O’Brien.

“All things considered, he thought the plea was in his best interest,” O’Brien said. “He’s very remorseful about his mother.”

An arrest report indicates that at 9:53 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2008, a woman later identified as Raymarie Brown called 911 and said, “I got stabbed by my son. Help me please.” When the operator asked, “You got stabbed by your son?” Raymarie Brown said, “Yes.” Those were her last words.

The operator continued talking and asked the woman her address, but she couldn’t speak. She just groaned, the report says.

At the time of the investigation, police were told that Brown was a methamphetamine user who had become increasingly violent.

After the 911 call, police responded to the residence in the 6300 block of West Haleh Avenue and found Raymarie Brown lying on a couch, dead from apparent multiple cuts and stab wounds.

The arrest report indicates a neighbor contacted the responding officers and told them he had a restraining order against Garrick Brown because he and his family had problems with him. Because of those problems, the neighbor had installed a video surveillance system. One camera was pointed at the Browns’ home.

At about the time of the 911 call, Garrick Brown was seen on the neighbor’s surveillance footage leaving in a silver car that was parked in the driveway.

His sister, who lived with Garrick and Raymarie at the home, told police she had been staying with friends because she had become fearful of her brother, the arrest report said. Garrick Brown had told his sister that he had recently stabbed two women, she told police. He had also gotten into an altercation in previous days when he rammed another person’s vehicle with her mother’s car, she said.

Garrick Brown was arrested at about 5:15 p.m. that same day, wearing the same clothes he had on when he was seen leaving his home. Police found bloodstains on his clothes and shoes, records indicate.

At the time of his arrest, Garrick Brown had an outstanding warrant for battery and domestic violence.

He has remained in custody since his arrest last October.

  1. fry him.

once again, we can thank liberals for this guy walking the streets. he had a warrant for violent behavior. he should have been behind bars.

  2. How many human time bombs are there out there walking around?

  3. If Metro was there, They would have been able to take him out and saved the mother's life, just like they did a couple weeks back. This is an example of why Metro does what they do so well, save lives of the innocent.

  4. Deputy Public Defender Tim O'Brien said "All things considered, he thought the plea was in his best interest," which begs the question that if he KNOWS what is best as opposed to worst, and can distinguish right from wrong, good from bad, then he is likely not mentally ill.

  5. Well said Bakersfield.

  6. Deputy Public Defender Tim O'Brien said that "All things considered, he thought the plea was in his own best interest," The accused did not say that, his highly capable, well educated legal counsel made the comment.
There are plenty of mental health issues that would leave a perfectly intelligent person prey to imaginary voices and compulsions and this sad individual was complicating his issues by using one of the worst drugs imaginable.
He was a disaster waiting to happen and now has to live with the knowledge that he killed his own Mother, that, and the fact that he is a meth addict saves anyone the job of sending him to Hell, he's there already.
Sure Metro could have stopped him by locking him up and putting him away on the outstanding warrant, by, as usual, putting their lives at risk, for which they get precious little thanks, but they can't be everywhere.
    Madness can happen anywhere.
